One of the great movie opens! That's William Conrad (1920-1994), the first marshall Dillon on radio and a WWII fighter pilot. His great voice narrated the classic television cartoon adventures of 'Rocky and Bullwinkle' (1959-1964) - and 'The Fugitive' (1963-1967). He also starred among other shows in the legal drama 'Jake and the Fatman' (1987-1992). He also directed numerous popular TV shows like 'The Rifleman.'

In addition to film and television acting, directing and producing, Conrad was also a versatile voice actor; he was the original Marshall Matt Dillon in "Gunsmoke" on radio (1952-61); he also did extensive voice-work in many other series from radio's golden age, such as "Escape" (1947-54), as well as others (often under a pseudonym). As Bill Conrad, he was the narrator of "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show" on T.V. (1959-64). A quick web search will take you to the complete "Gunsmoke" and "Escape" series, available at the Internet Archive. Conrad was also one of the two assassins of Burt Lancaster's character at the beginning of Lancaster's 1946 debut film, "The Killers" (the other was gravel-voiced veteran character actor Charles McGraw).

THE BALLAD OF JOHN CHISUM by Dominic Frontiere and Andrew J. Fenady 🎵 Chisum, John Chisum. 🎵 🎵 Weary, saddle worn. 🎵 They say that you can't make it, where you hard to what they said, or will you move your beads from Texas across the river red? They're bettin' you can't make it, but you've bet your life they're wrong, so keep ridin' try the Pecos to find where you belong. 🎵 Chisum, John Chisum. 🎵 🎵 Weary, saddle worn. 🎵 🎵 Chisum, John Chisum. 🎵 🎵 Can you still keep going on? 🎵 🎵 Now the wind blows lonely, and you can't help thinking 🎵 🎵 of the things that you left behind. 🎵 🎵 But you got a gamble on, each new horizon, 🎵 🎵 for the dreams that priced on your mind. 🎵 🎵 Chisum, John Chisum. 🎵 🎵 Weary, saddle worn. 🎵 🎵 Chisum, John Chisum. 🎵 🎵 Can you still keep going on? 🎵 Can you still keep going on? Well you cross beyond the brasses, fought Comanches rain and sand. You've bought your cattle westward but is this your promised land? You made it to the Pecos, carved your empire neath the sun. You've won a hundred battles but the fight keeps goin' on! 🎵 Chisum, John Chisum. 🎵 🎵 Weary, saddle worn. 🎵 🎵 Chisum, John Chisum. 🎵 🎵 Can you still keep going on? 🎵 Can you still keep going on?

Don´t think that the movie was particularly great, but that Intro is really something special, with Dominic Frontiere´s epic music, William Conrad´s recitation and, of course, John Wayne/Chisum watching over his land from the top of the hill like God contemplating creation. Too bad that the rest of the movie didn´t really live up to that.

This film is somewhat entertaining, but, like many of Wayne's later movies (e.g. The Alamo, True Grit, The Shootist, El Dorado, Big Jake), it suffers from predictability and preachiness. Most of The Duke's earlier films (such as She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, and especially Red River) were actually a WHOLE lot better.
