Well explained as always Steve. Better the new gardener has some success, rather than losing their crop and feels disillusioned. A bit like Tony with his soggy potatoes, when he left them in the soil and they got frozen!

Hi Steve, we love your vlogs. We started gardening last year. Just got our seed potatoes from dt brown. We're planting in tubs. When do we plant them. Also, how do we store them so they don't grow the long chits (this happened to us last year) much appreciated Alan and Michelle.

As a new lockdown allotmenteer I found that really interesting. It's inspired me to try a bit of early chitting vs no chit - I have plenty of space within which I can make mistakes, and do love to learn by trial and error (once I have some introductory knowledge). Thanks for the video

I start my earliest in containers in my Tunnell and once the shoots appear I place straw and a sheet over them at night incase of frost, by May I put them outside and harvest them by the end of May and free up the containers f9r another crop or carrots and Sprouts.

Thanks Steve great video and I have learnt something new today from this as well. Just to let you know I have linked this video to my allotment's Facebook account. Strangely enough I was talking with one of the new plotholders earlier today about potatoes - so this is ideal to pass onto everyone. Keep on giving your advice, we all learn from your videos, and then may change things to suit us when we are a little more experienced. Thanks again D&R

Great advice Steve. I've never deliberately chitted mine, but have made mistakes where they have ended up with those long white shoots. I've pretty much always just bunged them in the ground and they've done great. I would like to have a bit of a better succession this year with planting and harvesting though.

Steve that’s really good to explain to new gardeners as it’s hard starting off. I have tested buying seed potatoes and using farm potatoes and the seed potatoes produced less spuds than the seed spuds. I learn things every year and it makes gardening more successful Mandy

Brilliant points there Steve. I chitted me first earlies last year and as you say, they got frosted off and never really recovered. So much so that I’ve decided to not bother with first earlies this year cos the seconds come along not long after.

I chit my potatoes. Interestingly I wanted some very early potatoes one year and grew some in big pots in the conservatory unchited starting them very early. The rest of the seed potatoes were chitted in the conservatory. The unchitted potatoes were a foot tall before the chitted potatoes started chitting. I grew the very early potatoes under cover to give warmth and protect from frost

I bought my seed potatoes from Wilkos in the first week of January, not because I was in any hurry to chit or plant them, but because they were the cheapest I could find (2Kg/up to 30 tubers for £3) and if they were left sitting on the shelf in store in the warm and light they'd probably probably have started sprouting long white shoots well before planting time (and probably all tangled up in the mesh bags). So they are in 15x cell modules sitting in a stack of plastic mushroom boxes in a cool, dark space to slow down growth until I'm ready, and then I'll use my (complicated?) method of getting my polytunnel Charlotte's harvested before tomatoes are planted and outdoor Charlotte's harvested before blight appears in July.

Hi Steve, I always pre-sprout my potatoes so that I put them in the ground when they are 1 or 2 cm. If I follow your advice and don't pre-sprout my potatoes, what is the best time to plant them? Garden greetings, Estella, (NL) 👩🌾

That's another great video Steve very wise words I've never chitted mine I've always put them in the shed in egg trays to stop them from touching each other then just planted out when the time is right. Thanks for the advice this is something I will file away and keep in the back of my mind. I'm going to try the potato towers again this year, last was pants using peat free compost so this year I will try with some of my own compost plus some grow bags from last year all mixed up

What wonderful tips 👍 I've been having a go for years and that's lot's and lot's of failure, year after year. I'm stubborn and so keep going but for some, all those failures will be too disappointing and they'll give up. It's so important for new gardeners to get some quick, easy wins in that first year. Champion growing is a whole other ball game and requires a bit of experience. Lovely to have some simple tips from a seasoned gardener like you Steve to help the hopeless and hapless like me along. Thanks as always!

Thanks Steve for this great advice. I'm going into my first growing season so this is invaluable. Can I just clarify, as I've ordered my seed potatoes from King's Seeds and they are due to be delivered in February sometime. So when they arrive, store them somewhere dark and cool and check regularly. If there's any signs of them chitting them I need to move into somewhere light and cool until its time to plant out?

Keep your maincrop seed potatoes somewhere dark, preferably in paper bags so they can breath, where they won't freeze but will stay cool for a couple more months.

Steve this is the exact reason I follow you and love your channel… I feel like on every subject every channel will make a video telling you what they do and why that’s the right way meaning I have no idea whether I’m coming or going or what the right way is… as a first time allotmenteer or gardener in fact… I appreciate that you give me all the information to make an informed choice of my own! Thank you! Honestly you don’t know how valuable these videos are! Steph x

Completely agree. I do sometimes wonder whether chitting has been pushed by the seed companies just so they can clear their cold stores out earlier. It can be hard to find somewhere in the house which is cool enough to stop them sprouting in the packet, so I often end up chitting just to save them getting the spindly shoots, not because I actually want to do it. By the time I eventually plant them out in early April (March for the few extra early ones in bags in the greenhouse), the seed potatoes have been chitting for far too long and are often a shrivelled mess, even if the chits still look fine and they grow on well enough.

Wise words. Learning to grow your vegetables is a learning curve, I akin it to being an onion. Each year we learn a bit more and put on another layer of knowledge. I have the same problem in that new gardeners will ask me how to do things and I try to stick to simple advice but, yep they see me doing something a bit extra and get confused. I then have to explain that you need to learn the basics first and get a good result to encourage you to continue, nobody gets excited with a new hobby if you are failing all the time. Once they have got their first crops and they want to copy the things that I do because I like to push the boundaries too, then fine, lets do it together, knowing it might not work!
