Located high up in the Funeral Mountains, in 1871, a discovery was made - silver. This lead to one of the earliest mines in Death Valley. As legend has it, August J. Franklin picked up a rock to kill a rattlesnake, and found himself holding silver ore!
Chloride City didn’t form until 30 years after the mining began. The silver was taken by mule train to San Bernadino, 180 miles away. On their return journey they would be loaded with supplies for the miners.
In 1905 finally a town was established, with a total of three stamp mills. Unfortunately only 1 year later the town became a Ghost Town. Remnants of the past and one lone grave are all that remain of this once sprawling mining operation.
