Premier Cho Jung-tai on Friday headed south for a visit to the CSBC Corporation in Kaohsiung, accompanied by the new company chair Huang Cheng-hung. Cho’s visit was to inspect the progress of Taiwan’s new indigenous defense submarine, the Hai Kun. Upon mentioning that the government had placed orders for seven subs from the shipbuilder, the room erupted into applause. Let’s hear from Cho.
Cho Jung-tai
Premier
Under President Lai’s instructions to strengthen national security, we need to make long-term plans. So we have created a budget and a timeline for seven submarines. All within the same program. The moment I was to sign the document, I almost stood up to sign it out of respect.
Huang Cheng-hung
CSBC Corporation
Our biggest advantage at CSBC is that we have the biggest docks, and a lot of shipbuilding equipment. Our design capabilities are top-notch in the world. I think CSBC is one of few shipyards in Taiwan and in the world that has the capabilities to build submarines.
The Hai Kun is currently undergoing testing and is expected to be delivered to the Navy by the end of 2025. CSBC’s new chair called on the city government to lower tax rates, amid high operation costs. He said that many of the prototypes built by the corporation are highly complex and not especially profitable. In addition, the corporation has to pay a large sum of money in rent for its large industrial complex.
