Exactly what happened to me Dr. Westman.....Total cholesterol UP, LDL UP, HDL UP and Triglycerides DOWN. plus, 20 pounds of blubber GONE and have to buy new shirts and pants now. Same here, My HDL is normal and Triglycerides are normal, but LDL is up by 30-40 pts. My Doctor says eat more whole grains, etc. But I'm going to ride the wave. According to some research (DR Sikaris "Cholesterol and when to worry" on KZitem), the trifecta of high LDL, high Triglycerides and low HDL (which I've had for several years is the red flag for CV disease) after 2.5 months on Keto my LDL is still high (even a bit higher by about 40 pts) but my trigs and HDL are finally normal. My arthritis inflammation is improved and hopefully will continue to do so. I've lost 10 lbs and still need to lose another 10 lbs. but I feel better and just can't be bothered to 'freak out' about one factor. I realize it's a process for us as well as the doctors but I'm listening to my body for now. Like DR Westman says , when you reach our ideal weight, then take a look at any numbers that may be of concern.

I still miss pizza though. Making do with portabella mushrooms, a bit of sauce in the caps, pepperoni, sautéed bell peppers and onions (and the stems of the mushrooms) cheese and ooooh baby, still not dough but very satisfying!! I know I'll never be able to completely give up bread (love is love) but I can limit it and be happy! In the mean time I console myself with bacon, eggs cooked in butter, avocados, cream cheese, etc. all guilt free. I kinda like the tradeoff. :-)

First THANK YOU for the valuable information and support. I have severe CAD. I had a massive MI at age 38 and barely survived. At 48 came a quad bypass. I have always been active and exercise. My diet even at its worst was not a disaster. I hate sweet drinks and never drink them. I drink alcohol almost never. I believe my issues are more related to how I have trained my body over time to respond to stress. I am now in my late 50s and I have decided to commit to KETO for the simple reason that this is the only way my cholesterol levels have been normal. I have never had an HDL over 27 or LDL less than 250. I made this switch and I was at 88 and 113. I struggle with Fatigue at times and am working with Ketone drinks, L carnitine and other basic supplements to reach a balance. I don't wan this to be a diet I want to maintain it for good.

It is quick and easy and they had 2 labs within 10 miles of my home. No appointment time is necessary since they are walk-in labs. Just give them your 8 digit order number and have the blood draw. Results in about 3-4 days. Easy and MUCH more accurate than the old lipid panel in which the LDL is not even measured, only calculated with a formula known as the Friedewald Calculation.

I'm not worried, but my doctor will want me to take and increase my statins to 80. I went off all my statins in January. Decided I'd had enough!! How long does it take to get the numbers down after quitting statins? I've been on Keto for 4 years. I also take BP meds. Those numbers haven't gone down much, even though I lost 30 pounds! I have my own monitor. I'm on blood thinners because I had an Ischemic stroke 2 years ago. I'm sure it was because of BP and not any heart problems. I had been Keto for a year and a half before the stroke.

Dr. Westman? Isn't low density lipoprotein not a cholesterol anyway? Plus if they are small particle that is known to be bad. Is that not correct? If you see this please clarify. Is ldl on a CBC the same as that small particle?

gigi10233 C I am unaware of a statin preventing a stroke. Perhaps your doctor can show you a study demonstrating this? We typically see blood lipid markers improve on a Keto diet. We are mostly concerned with HDL and triglyceride levels, not total or LDL

@@AdaptYourLife Hi again Dr.Westman thanks again for your reply and information!! I will ask my doctor if he could provide me with evidence demonstrating his stance I also will ask if he could administer the NMR test. In your professional opinion based on my triglycerides being 103 and hdl being only 94 should i be concerned with my cholesterol?

Hi again gigi10233 C, it was the Adapt Team answering, apologies, we should have made that clear. We are not permitted to give medical advice or opinions on social media unfortunately. I can say that we are not convinced that statins will prolong life or make one feel better in any meaningful way. We strongly believe that a Keto or Low Carb protocol is beneficial as far as CV risk is concerned.

Hi Dr Westman, I’ve recently taken charge of my health & after much research I’ve adopted the ketogenic lifestyle. I find it works well for me, because processed food was like a drug, real food does not have the same effect, but then real food is not “blissed up” like manufactured food products, which are the ideal ratio of transfats:sugar:salt to cause addiction. During my research I’ve discovered that an average keto lipid profile varies somewhat to the typical raw food low fat vegan lipid profile. Whilst not always true, generally keto folks tend to get get a higher ratio of HDL:Triglycerides, with vegans ratio being reversed. Generally keto followers tend to have higher overall cholesterol & LDL, which is again opposite to a vegan lipid panel. I don’t think anybody knows yet, what this actually means, but my own hypothesis would be that different diet lifestyles produce different lipid profiles. Only further testing, perhaps by linking lipid profiles to CAC scores from those who have adopted & maintained a certain dietary regimen for a suitable time period will offer further illumination on which of the different dietary patterns is healthiest. Perhaps both are equally good, or different diets suit certain people better? I believe, however, that all research should be pooled & done in a truly scientific way, double blind RCT, wherever possible, rather than the constant drip of pseudo-scientific garbage churned out from meaningless observational “studies”. Any chance of finding some common ground, betwixt keto & vegan?

Hi Phil Baugh, this is the Adapt Team answering, although we advocate a Keto/Low Carb program, we understand that other diets may indeed work for others. As far as finding common ground between Keto/Vegan, you are able be in Ketosis while being Vegan. I hope this helps 😊

See Shai et al Circulation 2008. In this paper the carotid thickness decreased on 3 diets. One of the diets was a low carb diet! If the diet is at all related, and you have the disease, do not eat and drink what gave you the disease! Isn't that logical?

Dr Westman, I’m hoping you can give me some guidance. I started keto last November with about 60lbs to lose. I am 58 yrs old. I lost 12 lbs initially and I understand that was fluids or inflammation. I have followed keto very strict and was below 20 carbs then went to less than 10 carbs a day. I was also IF for 16 to 18 hrs. I have not lost any more weight, my BP went crazy and was put on a second med and I am now been Dx with A fib. I want to know why I am not losing weight. Can you help me?

Hi Cindy Woods, you would most probably need a coach. They would be able to look at the foods you are eating to see if you are inadvertently taking in carbs or sugar. It doesn’t make sense for BP to be raised from cutting carbs.

@AdaptYourLife

Hi Darius, Both Keto and LCHF can be done using "HIGH FAT" The "High Fat" is something that confuses many folks. There is a place for both. If you are simply after weight loss, we are of the opinion that calories do matter and that eating too much Dietary Fat is not optimal. In this case, the meaning of the "HIGH FAT" would be your own Body Fat" rather that Dietary Fat, remember, once you have eliminated carbohydrates, your body will use either Body Fat or Dietary Fat for energy. If you are on a Keto or LCHF program for therapeutic use, you may want to increase your Dietary Fat to reach a particular Blood Ketone level. I hope this makes sense.

Hi capeheartriz, please remember that this platform is not intended to replace your Doctor. Any advise here should be discussed with your Doctor. When doing a blood lipid panel (Typical cholesterol test) the triglyceride level should be within the normal range and one test that almost no one adds is an ultra sensitive CRP, this one is directly related to CV inflammation. I hope this helps.

After going on strict high fat, low carb "ketovore", my total lipids went from 156 to 770. Most of that number was LDL (658). I also had a CAC scan around the same time as the 770 lipid score, which also revealed a total of 1200 calcium. Now as a doctor, would you recommend I continue eating 70-80 percent of my daily calories in fat? Even after reducing my total fats to 40% there was very little change. I had to drop my fat macro to 30% before it started to come down. I hate high carb but have had to add back some carbs to "juggle" my macros. I'm eating over 50% of my calories from protein because I can't be walking around with that high of a lipid and a CAC score of 1200! @DanScottChannel
2 жыл бұрын
Well, from 770 to the mid 300's it took months but I was still eating oils, which is a big problem when it comes to health. Since this post three years ago, I have now adopted a low fat whole food plant based diet rich a a wide variety of whole foods while avoiding all factory oils and processed, packaged food. My last cholesterol was in the mid 100's, blood pressure actually low (without med's) and A1C below 5. After a decade of serious back problems, with inflamation, are starting to heal now. My previous idea that carbs were bad due to raising glucose was all wrong. Through the gys at Mastering Diabetes, I've learned fat is the problem with insulin resistance, not carbs. Keto is the worst thing for insulin resistance!
