... LYRICS: ODE OF THE COG: “They say that time heals all things. They say you can always forget. But the smiles and the tears across the years, they twist my heartstrings yet…” “She’s beautiful...” It’s clear. I’ve thought things that have sealed my fate. To think in the first place is folly. By the time it’s been done, it’s too late. But there are immutabilities in this world; facts, impossible to be changed later. And so, if thought itself is death, why not set pen to paper? To the future, or to the past. To a time when thought is free, I - we - the dead act as your omen. Salutations! Greetings! You’ve already granted me my existence; one truth, so please allow me one more. Please. Oh God, please do still accept that two plus two is four. Oranges and lemons, say the bells of St. Clement’s. Rewrite the past till the truth cannot last. She is my constant, my truth. My sole reprieve from the onslaught of bullshit that bastard Big Brother’s been belittling me to believe. She’s a disease to the Party. A blight. A slut. Corrupt to the core. I scarcely think I could ever love her more. Julia, she’s smarter than I. She knows just as well, we are not here. We don’t exist, we’ve been struck from this list. Under the boot, our very life is smeared. But if I could just put out one truth so that the rains of hope could once more pour, the elden could ingrain in the youth of the future that two plus two is four. Oranges and lemons, say the bells of St. Clement’s. You owe me five farthings, say the bells of St. Martin’s. When will you pay me? Say the bells of St. Bailey’s. When God’s head is hauled, say the bells of St. Paul’s But God knows God’s dead, said the voice in your head. I recognized that voice, though I’d not before heard what he said. Here comes a candle to light you to bed, and here comes a chopper to chop off your head! “They can’t get to your heart.” WAR IS PEACE. “The law of gravity is nonsense.” FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. “Do you know how long you’ve been here?” IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. “How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?” “Four.” “No. How many fingers, please?” “Four… Four! What else could I say?” “Room 101.” Under the spreading chestnut tree, I sold you and you sold me. The chestnuts fall like autumn leaves. The chestnut toils. The chestnut breathes. The Chestnut hosts me. The barman loathes. One cup of gin. Three dashes of cloves. The bullet is coming. The gun’s already shot. I thought that they would lose. They will not. But as the bullet hits my head, in one brief moment of lucidity, merely seconds before my corpse-to-be hits the floor, my subconscious, nearly dead, clings to one last chance at Victory, just as those cigarettes whose stench clings to the whore. It’s simple, what’s been said cannot rewrite our human history; our lives, our deaths, our fights, our pains, our wars. And so, under my final breath, knowing full well there’s none to listen to me, I utter: “Two plus two is five.” Five. Five. Five. Five? OR IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR? WELL TOO BAD, SWINE, THE END IS NEAR. OUR PASSION BREEDS DISSENSION AND ONE DAY - PERHAPS IN A THOUSAND YEARS - THE MEEK WILL RISE TO THE TUNE OF A TIDE THAT WASHES CLEAN THIS VENEER. THE WATERS OF TRUTH WILL RUN THROUGH YOU. THE WATERS OF TRUTH WILL RUN CLEAR. YOU THINK THAT A RAT LIKE YOU CAN SCARE ME WITH THREATS OF YOUR OWN KIND? I MAY NOT BE THE SMOOTHEST COG IN THE MACHINE, BUT I’M SURE NOT FUCKING BLIND. I AM THOUGHT. I’M THE PROLE. I’M THE ATTACK. I’M THE REBELLION. I’M THE WHORE. AND AS THE LIGHTS IN MY EYES FADE TO BLACK, I’LL SCREAM: TWO PLUS TWO IS FOUR. “Look. I hate purity. I hate goodness. I don’t want virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone corrupt.” “Well, I ought to suit you. I’m corrupt to the core.” DEAR MACHINE. HATE, THE COG (ODE OF THE COG, NON-FICTION MIX): “They say that time heals all things. They say you can always forget. But the smiles and the tears across the years, they twist my heartstrings yet…” “She’s beautiful.” I hit a crossroads recently, when I had my first royalties pay. Four thousand dollars for the month of March, paid out in the month of May. And as I reached it, I remembered. I heard the voices of my friends, my parents, my teachers say: “Enjoy the fun while it lasts. You’ll have to get on the treadmill one day.” And yes, I know. I get it. That is just the world in which we live. The amount we receive in return rarely justifies what we give. But for the first time, maybe ever, I see a path I want to walk. A path on which I can prove to myself that I’m not all talk. Oranges and lemons, say the bells of St. Clement’s. One day you’ll start walking and you won’t stop till mourning. I’ll admit it, I’m fucking scared. It’s a fickle game to play. The scope just keeps tightening on what I do, and what I think, and what I say. But for every fear that I have, two more dreams come to settle its score. Now all I need to do is step through that door. So I’ve taken two weeks off, with no intention of going back. But as I did, I felt the gold in my eyes start fading down to black. I think it’s doubt? Or shame? Maybe guilt? Or a combination of it all? Why is it that once I’m finally on-course, I get the overwhelming urge to stall? Oranges and lemons, say the bells of St. Clement’s. You owe me five farthings, say the bells of St. Martin’s. When will you pay me? Say the bells of St. Bailey’s. When time runs its course, says the voice of remorse. “But God knows you’ll fail and end up fleeing with tucked tail.” The black behind my eyes makes its way to my stomach, as the pit begins its wail. Here comes a candle to light you to bed, and here comes a chopper to chop off your head! “BUT I AM NOT DONE YET.” “You know perfectly well what is the matter with you.” “JUST A FOOTNOTE IN EVERYONE ELSE’S PSYCHE.” “You are mentally deranged.” “SICK OF BEING THE MEAN.” “How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?” “Four.” “No. How many fingers, please?” “Four… Four! What else could I say?” “Room 101.” Under the spreading chestnut tree. There we sit, both you and me, rooted underneath this old machine. The chestnut toils. The chestnut breathes. The chestnut quiets. The system groans. The chestnut, tired, heads back on home. Too weary to think. Time, too limited to try. The chestnut repeats till it dies. But perhaps with enough time, and strength, and luck, and zeal, I might just prove that a chestnut can be free. A life spent writing rhymes and expressing the things I feel sounds pretty damn appealing to me. Each tick of the metronome, each chime, each beat, each chord, each spiel is but one further disconnection from this tree. So it may kill me in the process to do this full-time, but without, I may never heal. I may yet die poor, but I will die me. Please. Please. Please. Please. PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR BEING VAIN, BUT THERE’S SO MUCH MORE THAT I WANT TO SAY. THIS PIT THAT’S BEEN GROWING INSIDE IS LEADING ME ASTRAY. IT MAY NOT LAST AND AS TIME FLOWS PAST, I MAY JUST REGRET THIS TRADE, BUT I OFFER YOU MY RESIGNATION AND I OFFER TO THEM THIS TIRADE. SO FUCK YOU. OH, I QUIT. I NEVER OPTED IN TO THIS GAME, SO NO. FUCK YOU. I FORFEIT. I’LL DIE AS I AM - A WEAK, SMALL MAN - BEFORE I SURRENDER TO YOUR ABYSS. I MAY WELL YET CRASH AND BURN, BUT FOR NOW JUST LET ME HAVE THIS. “They can torture you. They can make you say anything. But they can’t make you believe it. They can’t get inside you. They can’t get to your heart.”

What I love about this song is how it breaks off of the original 1984 at the end. Rather than Winston becoming fully complacent, in saying that he truly loves big brother and being shot in the head, he takes one final impossible rebellion in not just thinking but screaming a immutable truth, one he was explicitly tortured to claim as false. Two plus Two is Four.

if anyone is confused on what 'ode of the cog' is based off of; if you've never heard of it, it's based off a book named 1984 by george orwell. it's a dystopian novel that tells the story of a man named winston. society is completely controlled and monitored, and winston struggles to be allowed to have a thought that is his that isn't misinformation or just blatantly controlled by the society he lives in. maybe read it, if you'd wish (or don't).

i like how as the video progresses, Winston looks less and less monstrous and veiny and more fuller and human, there's no actual evidence but i feel the point is made. also, the monologues by Winston originally feel like a sorrowful tune sung by a voice no one can hear, but as the song progresses someone does infact hear, making the second time the rhyme is sung more fuller, until the party seemingly intercepts the meeting of the two and drive it into a cacophonous noise, possibly symbolizing the torture in room 101 with the sudden loud noises and sudden stops, with the ending returning to the singular rhyme with a sullen tone behind it, signaling that the rhyme cannot be finished, but it can end.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong man, which I very well suspect to be the case, but it seems like the second song is about the struggles of becoming a songwriter on KZitem full time and making music instead of having a repetitive soul crushing job. I can see how it would relate to the 1984 theme as in both it seems that you’re no more than a cog in the machine, and the lyrics strongly hint it as well. Especially the part of the people around Jash to be discouraging of his dreams and how scary it is to actually take the plunge and commit yourself to doing what you love at the expense of money and sacrifice. Because let’s face it, KZitem is a rather unpredictable field and it’s subject to change at any moment and for someone who wants to make it their full time gig it’s very daunting. Perhaps that’s what the song implies is the “stall” and why the narrator took 2 weeks off to never return. Either way, on the slim chance that it is the case of the song’s subject matter, I wish you the very best in pursuing your endeavors!
