Just watched your Color Theory Basics video as well as this one obviously. I really admire the way you explain colors. It's very to-the-point and simple enough for anyone to understand. I definitely speak for everyone when we say thanks for sharing what you know :)

Developing a website for a local restaurant and this really helped the brain juices swirl. Didn't think there was much to it, but you definitely helped me understand that isn't true. Thanks for keeping the video, short, sweet, and to the point. Also really appreciated the break downs, examples, and definitions. This is an awesome video and I will bookmark it for next time!!!!

Hi there! I'm a growing designer, tryin' to edu-ma-cate myself on things like color theory and color palettes. Your little video here has helped me learn about this stuff by leaps and bounds beyond just understanding the different types of color palettes. And thank you, thank you, thank you for the link to your Robo Girl Poster case study. It is an excellent resource for trying to understand the decision making behind the design of the poster, not to mention, a fantastic complement to this video. This video was the exact kind of information behind better understanding color palettes and some color theory that I was looking for! Thanks for sharing the knowledge and broadening my understanding of this massive subject! - G

I usually make up things as I go, and I think about drawings in black & white. Sometimes I'm drawing a human and I change it to an elf or any magical creature(this happened this week) and I only start thinking about the color when the drawing is almost ready

Thanks for sharing this video. Color has always been a challenge for me, your advice to think of the drawing as half drawing and half color is good. You commented that the colors of the poster of the can-can show depicts a lively theme. Is that because it's yellow and yellow is a lively color? Or is it from historical context and yellow was not a ubiquitous color? I ask because when I see that poster, I feel pretty low key and kind of...subdued, I guess. Compared to visual media today, which is very artificially satured, I admit, it feels very muted to me- maybe that is the context that makes me feel that way.

Really enjoyed your Archetypes series which I read on your blog, such interesting portraits! And the creative process you used to arrive at the final design was also interesting to me. When you create your color blocks, do you do this on paper with art pens or paint? Or was it in Illustrator? I appreciate all the art tips : )
@simplearttips382

+A Gatewood I aplogize for the late reply! Most of my work has been digital and in those cases I use photoshop to create color breaks. For the archetypes series, I made very quick and lazy color breaks in photoshop first to narrow it down to a general color scheme for each piece, then I picked my favorites for each one and made slightly more polished versions using acrylic paint so I'd have a much clearer idea of what the finished product would look like. For traditional media projects I would suggest making color breaks using the same medium you'll be using for the final piece.

At 4:05 where you talk about the colors red orange and blue green can you use all the colors in between. I'm doing a school project where my teacher prints out color pages for us and we have to use a different color scheme for each picture. So I want to know for example if I pick violet and and yellow will I get to use all the colors betweenthose to colors like red, red orange etc. ?
@simplearttips382

If you're required to use complementary colors I would think you need to stick with one color and its opposite color on the color wheel and not deviate too far into any other hue (or color) in the color wheel. If that's not a requirement then you can probably use any colors you want. I suggest watching my video on color theory if you haven't already :) kzitem.info/news/bejne/rWd5sW2YfmV5kqg
