I attended De Anza in 2014. I graduated in Spring of 2019, then transferred to Arizona State University in fall of 2019. I absolutely love ASU and the environment. I can't help but miss De Anza though. When I was applying for transfer, I was obsessed with getting into UC Irvine, my dream school. I got rejected from a lot of colleges in California due to intense competition. I started applying to a few out of state universities to expand my options. I was so happy that ASU accepted me! I feel like I'm really thriving here and I am so excited to graduate in December of 2021.

I’m from SJ too. But what I want to go to school for Foothill has the best program followed by Cañada in Redwood city. I’m interested in Radiologic technologist and those two schools are the only ones in the bay that have that program. Unless I go to Gurnick Academy in San Mateo but that school is private and costs A LOT! The ranking overall is something I never paid attention to, I mostly payed attention to certain departments at the school and compared.

So I am interested in both schools. I am interested in the dance club that is in de anza. However, with your views for education wise, west valley seems like a good school. I am still conflicted because I should pick a school that has both good education and clubs that are interesting

How cool. Came up here from Oranges (that’s where Cypress is) to visit De Anza while I stayed in Los Altos. Beautiful campus & way cool tech flea market wknds. I agree, choose what’s easier for u to get to, but offers the pathway & of course any needed resources u may have. Stanford had come some way in its programs for disabled students. I live in Burbank now, so Glendale College would be it and it’s a very nice campus & many pathway options into USC+LAC Mental health & teaching

I'm really not knowledgable in this area. I think you would benefit most from speaking to an admissions counselor in the school you want to attend. If you already have a bachelor's degree from out of the country, you should double check to see if that will be accepted. It's unlikely that you will need to start over with an AA if you already have a BA or BS.

I’m considering between Pasadena Community College, Glendale Community College, and Santa Ana College. I’m an international student and I want to transfer to a 4-year university to get a bachelor degree. I’m studying Business Admin in my first year and will change major to another Business program (accounting, finance, etc) later. Please leave any advice if you can and thank you!

Hi there! No real advice as the decision is quite personal and can only be made by you. The only thing I have to say is be sure to pick the school that fits your needs. They all offer the same education. Good luck!

There isn't just one advisor there. My experience with advisors at WVC was very bad but that was also almost 10 years ago. I doubt the same people still work there and things have likely changed a lot.

Hi, is there any reason you want to go to De Anza in particular? All CCs in California are roughly the same (more or less), and De Anza is located in one of the most expensive places to live in the country. I definitely wouldn't advise moving there unless you are already wealthy, because it's not feasible for the average person, especially if you want to live alone.

Hi Esther, De Anza-Foothill is just the name of the school district. It’s not a school. De Anza is a school and Foothill is a school and they are both part of the same school district.

My mother use to teach at Mission College Quite frankly, I found that DeAnza College and even Santa Monica were just way too hard and intimidating. I took a multicultural class in DeAnza and teacher asked for two 18 page papers. And in both systems, I could never get to English 1A/1. Fast forward almost 15 years later, I enrolled at Shoreline community college which has a high level of international students and quite a few students transfer to the u-dub (University of Washington-- Seattle main campus). Although my English papers were very wordy, they didn't grade as harshly as California instructors. In fact, I got a 4.0 in English 101 and 102, Composition 1 and Composition Ii: research. In my classes, the average paper was 2-4 pages. I wouldn't really call my sociology paper a paper since she had a specific formula: explain the social problem, state the sociological significance....etc. In other words, the instructor was holding your hand and it was more like answering some questions to total 10,000 words. In fact, she stated call this section 1 and this section II, III, and so forth. The university of Washington and other educational social institutions within Washington state actually indicate if lots of writing will be a heavy emphasis in a course by placing W next to the course. Got example I took Drama 101W. English courses are excluded from W courses and just fulfill the composition requirement. However, students planning on transferring to the UW need to take at least 2 W courses in addition to composition. In my experience, W courses at community colleges assigned papers on longer than 10 pages. None of the teachers I took required two 18 page papers like my teacher on California at DeAnza college. However, it is commonplace fur English 102 students to have to complete 1 15 page research paper. I didn't have to do that. My instructor told me that she stops reading after 9 pages. Another thing that makes this system easier is that Precalculus is divided into 2 quarter classes. I had to take part II about 3 times, but I finally passed! In my mind 2.0 is passing since most QSR classes must be passed with a 2.0 to receive credit for graduation at a 4 year school and /or proceed to the next class. 1.0 grades (D) receive credit and technically transfer but wouldn't fulfill the QSR requirements for a bachelor's. Technically even a 0.7 is passing. However, that's a bit misleading to students as D's are not satisfactory. But if you get a 0.7 in a general education course and your GPA us way above 2.0 (some majors want 3.0), then the 0.7 is just enough to fulfill a graduation requirement. If you're at a CC, 2.0 is the only graduation requirement. I think it's a bit misleading to tell students that a minimum grade of 1.0 is needed to fulfill a course requirement for an associates transfer degree. At minimum, only grades of 2.0 or higher should be applied to the degree. Why? Because it sets the wrong mindsets for college success and even transferability. While we all have weak spots, it's never an excuse to aim for a 1.0. If you have for a 3.0 or 4.0 but end up with a 1.0, that's fine,,especially if it's not a QSR, composition, or something on your major. In addition, not many colleges will accept a student with just a 2.0 GPA consisting of grades ranging from 1.0 to 2.5. If a student has a 2.0 GPA, I think one of the only saving graces is if they have an 4.0 in English, math, or a science course, for example a student with a 2.0 GPA who gets a 3.5 in Calculus 1 or a 3.5 in Inorganic Chemistry. With such a good grade on a STEM course, the admins might be impressed, especially if the applicant come from a disenfranchised background or has any barriers. I graduated with my associates (transfer) in 2019 as a 42 year old non-traditional student, and I am pursing a certificate While some may only pick the state of Washington for their educational opportunities,,it has expanded mine. I don't think I would have ever been able to graduate under the California community college system. Yes, we have extremely challenging teachers here, especially math, but I don't regret moving to Washington, and I'm proud of my accomplishments.
