Wow!! I had to search through all your videos to find this. Never before has this information been so vital. I’ve told you before that I’m from California. I’m a truck driver (aka Independent Contractor), who’s company is in Springfield, Missouri. But I truck all over the country. Unfortunately, California passed AB5. Because of this bill, anyone claiming to be an independent contractor out of California, has to either get their own authority; or become an employee of the company they work for. Otherwise, they have to obtain residency in another state. We’ve been out of state for 6 years anyway Trucking the country and all our things are in storage. We’ve finally decided to just leave. That’s going to mean downsizing. Selling everything in storage or donating it. Thank you so much! Looks like we’re changing our residency status to Nevada

We have been a resident of both Nevada (23 years) and South Dakota (7 years). South Dakota is more reasonable than Nevada. Rapid City South Dakota has a much lower sales tax than Nevada, Insurance Rates are lower, In Nevada you need to be a resident of a rural (Not Clark or Washoe) to not be required to have a yearly vehicle smog inspection. Going to Nye County does currently exempt you from this requirement. I South Dakota the are no Smog checks required at this time. Being a Resident of South Dakota requires you to be physically in the state once every five years for a period of 24 hours. We are there often throughout the year so this isn't a big deal. We save about $800 a year being a resident of South Dakota over being a resident of Nevada. We use Americas Mailbox as our physical address and have been extremely happy with them. This is what has worked our for us and is another option.

I was doing some research for the future and have targeted South Dakota for those reasons. They don't tax retirement income, which is pretty important for a lot of RVers who will depend on a pension, 401 or 403, and SSI.

A hospital birth certificate is a keepsake record that the hospital gives to the parents. It usually has feet prints of the baby on it and the date of birth and name of the baby. It's not a legal copy of the actual legal birth certificate kept at the county records office. Sometimes a copy of a hospital birth certificate would be accepted at certain places but not anymore.

Carolyn, I love your videos! One safety point, for your cute dog. If the airbag ever deploys he will be seriously injured or killed if you can't switch the airbag off. If you can shut it off there is still the problem of him being injured or killed if you have to quickly apply the breaks or get rear ended. He will be thrown into the windshield or dashboard. What I have done to protect my furry kid is to put a sturdy harness on him, and buckle the seat belt and attach a short rope to the seat belt then to his harness. To make it easier for me to get him in and out of the seat I use a carabiner (used for climbing not the cheap-o kind) that I connect to his harness and to the rope that is attached to the seat belt. This is only if I can turn off the airbag. The motorhome that I just purchased doesn't give me the option to shut off the airbag, so I took the door off his large hard plastic kennel, cut a hole in the side, to run the shoulder seat belt through so that I can lock the kennel in place. This way if the airbag deploys it won't crush him and he isn't thrown into the window. If you are interested I can send you pictures of the set up. I was on patrol for many years and it was so sad to see animals injured or killed during minor accidents. Have a save trip to Alaska!

Cosmic country girl, I've seen videos from many sources about how it is in certain places there now. I'm 53 and wouldn't believed it if I hadn't seen it. I couldn't understand all the garbage/syringes/human waste in the streets. That could lead to disease outbreak! Here, in deep country, and in cities as well, i remember the demand to clean up back in the 1970's and up. and it got cleaned up too! In the vids iI've seen there were tents on the streets!!!? I'm in the country and we can't dare do that here. It's madness! I, being from here, USA,...don't understand how that's allowed or near legal to take place. But I'm glad to see your comment on this, it was helpful to know it.'s all real. Thoughts for you, blessings!

Reading the comments about the homeless & trash problem. It’s been said many times over that a lot of the homeless are transplants from other States, like all the central & eastern States because of the harsh weather they have there. Maybe there would be less homeless in Ca if those States provided them with shelter & food to survive. So instead Ca gets blamed for everybody else problems. These are not all Ca resident homeless. Would you live in NY during a winter or move to a warmer more temperate weather State?

👍Thank you for sharing the process. For the cities, counties, states & feds...it’s all about the money...they want every person accounted for so they can “collect”...the whole system is “a business” they couldn’t can any less about us as a person. As I’ve done my research, I’ve come to understand that it’s next to impossible to “truly” exist anonymously...it seems to me that a person will have to “register” somewhere at some point for something. 😖😔

Best video, ever!!! Thank you for sharing this. I'm a New Hampshire resident, but that must change this summer. New Hampshire makes it impossible for nomads to keep their residency, even though we are also income tax free (mostly). I'm considering all the usual states, and it looks like Florida may be the winner. Florida does not charge sales tax on vehicles owned for six months or more. That's a big deal for me, since NH has no sales tax either. Most states will charge sales tax on vehicles, if you paid less than their rate when you bought your vehicle! Something for nomads to consider, if they lived in a state with no sales tax, such as Oregon, Delaware, New Hampshire, and in sure their are others. Again, thanks for the great video!

Great info... I too want to choose Nevada because of the "no income taxes" (SD is a close second and I love Rapid City). I will be starting my journey when I retire and the small amount of income that I will have needs as little taxes as possible. Reading some of the comments, I do not understand why some feel we shouldn't watch our budget and that we should pay fees for things that aren't necessary. I used to live in a state with emissions inspection, and it was very expensive every year to get approved. They always seem to find something even though I did a good job with maintenance. I plan on the same good maintenance habit and trying to get solar for even a smaller impact on the environment eliminating the generator and burning of propane. Love your smile!

Carolyn thank you so much for all your help you are so informative. love watching your adventures. Hope you have a wonderful time in Alaska. I was there one time in 99 to visit my sister who lives in Kenai and my Aunt who lived on the Tok cut off near Gakona. She and my uncle moved to Alaska in 58 as homesteaders. They had Posty's Trading post. Have fun. it's so cool. Be safe and God be with you.

This was an awesome video! Always happy to see Capone. About the birth certificate, it has to be issued by the state you were born in, not the hospital. Must be a way to squeeze more $ out if us. OMG I had to get one from NJ and I was living in AL, what a P.I.T.A.! Congratulations on being a new NV resident Carolyn! Kisses to Capone. Hugz to you!

Great information! Here's the thing about not wanting to deal with California smog control, emissions do not know borders. Part of what I want my van life to be about is love of the planet. Perhaps that's not part of your passion? I know you're very much committed to woman's issues which is amazing! I think I'll keep my California residency even if it costs me. Emissions controls are vital for keeping our ozone layer in tact, preventing global warming, etc. As always, you do you!

Hugs to the boy in the passengers seat! Love Capone! This video showed people the full details in breakdown, they know exactly the papers... etc to have now. No confusion at all about what to do! Good job on detail and vid.

When I was tryin to get my NEVADA drivers license I was told I needed birth certificate any an all marriage licenses an divorce decrees ss card an my current drivers license the guy was very rude about it an told me to come back when I had all those items. so I ended up renewing the idaho drivers license instead of gettin Nevada. Which worked well as I ended up back in Idaho I’m so glad to hear u were able to get it all done with no issues. Sounds like that place is a nice friendly place.

Welcome to Nevada Carolyn. I moved to NV in 1986 from CA. I'm never going back to live in CA. Also welcome to Pahrump, there is a lot to see and do here. I moved here in 1991. Have fun here and enjoy your travels.

Wow! That IS a big deal! Congratulations! Californian here as well with the same situation- Californian at heart and hard to let that go but it makes no sense as I’m rarely there yet have to drive back just for a smog check! Thank you for this video. Looks like more hoops than I can handle though, that’s a LOT of hoops! And paperwork!
