Although I knew almost all the concepts you discussed, it is all a lot clearer now. I bought the older Nikon 16-85 at the time for my d5100. I now use it on my d7200. I would recommend it to any Dx shooters. I presume the newer 16-80 is just as good. I've a number of primes which I never use ( the zooms have the flexibility, these don't). I will admit the quality of the images is superior. Cheers E

Great video! My favorite lens for the d5500/d5600 is the Nikon DX 35mm f/1.8 G. The field of view is perfect for street photography (about 52mm), and it's a great little lens for under $200. I like the 50mm, but it shrank the field of view to a point that was just to narrow for my taste, so I only use it on my FX nowadays.

Excellent lens for the money. Great for portraits and in low light. I would like to add the 10 - 24mm. As for the camera, live view and the touch screen, with the ability to see the camera settings more clearly than a small window on top of the camera is a real bonus for someone who needs reading glasses. Actually I had read a blog which said: The new lens is made in Nikon’s factory in Thailand and its build quality is much as you’d expect for a mid-range lens. Size-wise it’s a good match for the D7100 body that was supplied with the lens for this review but would probably be a bit ungainly on smaller D5500 or D3300 bodies.

That's a very good video! I would also recommend (for Nikon APSC beginners) the 35mm F1.8 which is VERY cheap but very good and also lightweight. In addition to that a used Nikon 10-24 or Tokina 11-20mm. If the 16-80 is too expensive, you can also go with a Sigma 17-70. One of the best ASPC lenses on the market is the Sigma 18-35mm, but it is also expensive and heavy. The old Nikon 17-55 is also very good (and cheap when you buy it used) but weights a lot. For travelling the cheap 18-200 Tamron is good if you are price sensitive. Always think about what you want to do with your camera and if weight is important (travelling, hiking, ...). --> And you can save a lot money when you buy used lenses!

1.What's the difference between 50mm and 85 mm prime lenses? is the extra payment is worth enough? 2. For macro, is the extension ring will serve the purpose ?
@MaartenHeilbron
7 жыл бұрын
1) The 85mm will get you closer - meaning the camera doesn't have to be so close to the subject, it's usually used for portraits in studio settings. You're probably not paying for the focal length, but for the quality of materials and construction - or the maximum aperture. For portraits the larger the aperture (i.e., the smaller the F number) the better.

Newer 18-55mm lenses have a 55mm filter diameter and no manual switches for A/M and VR selectors. As for the AF-P, any 2016+ Nikon will be compatible with them OOtB. Cameras from 2015 such as the d3300, d5300, and d7200 will need a firmware upgrade to be fully compatible. Keep in mind that the d7200 will NOT have a firmware-based VR switch, so VR will be always on in the d7200. I have a d7200 and my lenses are: Prime: AF-P DX 35mm f1.8G General Purpose: AF-S DX 18-105mm f3.5 (this one is quite heavy) Telephoto: AF-P DX 70-300mm f4.5

The 16-80mm lens is a very expensive upgrade to buy on its own, not quite so expensive when bought as a "kit" with some of the higher-end bodies. I've been using Nikon digital for about 14 years and my first upgrade to the lit lens was the older, slower 16-85VR which can now be bought used for not much money compared to the 16-80. I also have a used Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 which I think is a much under-rated lens. As good as the newer Nikon 16-80 but with slightly less zoom range, and I am impressed with the sharpness of my copy for under a third of the price of the Nikon.

Thank you very much for your explanatory video! The comparison was very clear, and even though I couldn't totally understand the numbers in the begin of the video, I got the gist of the it! I am changing my D3200 by either a D5600 or a Canon 750D. As I already have a 50-200mm, and I love to shot portraits on 200mm, that has weighted in favor of the getting the D5600, so I can keep the lenses. If possible, I would like to know your opinion about what do you think make a better set for everyday photography and portraits: the Canon 750D + 18-55mm + 50mm (prime lens f/1.8) or the Nikon D5600 + 18-55 + 50-200mm. Thanks!
@MaartenHeilbron
6 жыл бұрын
Neither of those kit lenses are worth owning. What is behind your decision to upgrade to a new camera? Would you be equally happy just purchasing a better lens - for example, a nice 85mm prime will do more to improve your portrait quality than a new camera.
@diegodiasmachado
6 жыл бұрын
The D3200 got dust and few grains of sand inside while I shooting photos close to a helicopter in Italy. Fortunately the camera was insured, and I took the camera to a Nikon authorized assistance point to remove the dust/sand without worrying about cost. However, they decided to reimburse the equivalent of the price of the camera rather than fix it. I am not particularly worried about getting a weather sealed camera this time, because the circumstances where the camera got damaged were rather unusual and I don't think I will be using the new camera on a situation where weather sealing will play a major role. Another option I thought considering was a 77D. I could get it by about the same price of the 750D, but would come with no lens - only the body. In that case I would get a second hand 18-55mm STM lens to use the camera initially. The 750D, on the other hand, would come with a 18-55mm and a 50mm f/1.8.

@MaartenHeilbron
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words and the subscription. It won't damage the lens - but if you point the lens directly at the sun (or another very bright object) it may - although mostly in liveview mode. When camera stores recommend UV filters, they're suggesting two things - one that the UV filter sits in front of the lens, making it less likely to get damaged, but also to reduce some haze that might be visible in some situations. If you're careful, it's not really necessary. I talked and demonstrated that here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/l6Rq4Kp6sJWIp2U

Seems like most of your comments were aimed at lenses in general and not Nikon in particular. Would you say that lens choices are in general brand-independent? Or that there is a philosophy of lens selection (e.g. zoom vs. prime) that transcends the brand of camera/lens you have?
@MaartenHeilbron
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, once you extract some of the Nikon-specific terminology, the information is fairly generic. And broad strokes, the comments could be applied across the board. That is an excellent question, and one that's worth pursuing - to do a video about the philosophy of lens selection. It's a topic or concept that I only alluded to in the very short section on bokeh. There is some conventional wisdom about which kind of lens works best for a specific situation or need, and that deserves further exploration. Thanks for your note - you are sparking good thoughts.

Hi Marteen, I am confused between the Nikon D610 and the Nikon D750. The D610 is available with a 50mm f/1.8 and battery pack WiFi adapter for 900 USD while the D750 body only is available for 1200 USD. Which camera is a better buy?
@MaartenHeilbron
4 жыл бұрын
That depends. As the image quality is similar, unless you know that there are one or more features on the D750 that you will use, you should choose with your wallet and your hand (which fits better).

I am still in confusion with choosing lenses . The main problem i face is in low light i don't want to use the flashlight. I did not get enough shutter speed even on increasing the noise. What should i do in order to get best night photographs. also i am unable to get closeups of insects and small objects. i have 70-200mm Af-S lens. Please help me out.
@MaartenHeilbron
7 жыл бұрын
It sounds as if you may need a faster lens. If your shutter speed is already down to 1/60 (probably the slowest you can handhold) and your ISO is already at 6400 (probably the most noise most of us will tolerate), there are not many options other than increasing the light, either with a flash or other source. For closeups of small objects, a macro lens is recommended.

Thank you for the very informative video which I just now came across. Would a NIkon d 5500 or 5600 be suitable for food blog photography? If so, can you recommend the appropriate lens. Thanks again Barry
@MaartenHeilbron
6 жыл бұрын
Every camera is appropriate for food photography. In general you need a fairly wide angle (less than 35mm equivalent), with a large aperture (F2 or larger). And even then in some dark restaurants you may want an unobtrusive flash.

I have Nikon D3300. I have the kit 18-55, 35 prime and would be buying the 70-300 to start my wedding videography business. Don't you think that's enough for a beginner. I am a journalist and have taken videos on Sony camcorder. I have also been a photo journalist with film camera Nikon (I think the model name was D10) in the 90s. What is your advice to people who have taken up DSLR recently and want to pursue a different genre. Thanks
@MaartenHeilbron
6 жыл бұрын
Although the 70-300 will give you an extended reach, neither of those lenses are very good quality. A good portrait lens might serve you better. As for advice ... what genre are you referring to?

I see. This is more a question of approach and style than hardware. Although if your emphasis is video a dedicated video camera will serve you better than a DSLR.

Hello Maarten, great review. I only did not understand one thing and that is would 50mm f1.8 FX be too much croped on the nikon d3400 DX ? Thank you so much for knowledge and skills which you give us for free!
@MaartenHeilbron
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words, they are appreciated. On a DX body, the 50mm lens would give you the same field of view as a 75mm (approximately) lens on an FX body. Is that too much?
@lilyjo7479

Well, as a beginner I really think that I do not have correct vision of how it goes to look like.. but something what I really like on 50mm except bokeh is that I can be far from subject (when I shoot portrait)and for other things I have 18-55mm and it's really great lens, but I am still thinkig above 50FX and 35DX on my dx camera....

@MaartenHeilbron
7 жыл бұрын
If you are taking portraits of people (or objects) a prime lens with a large aperture (that means F2 or an even smaller F number) will provide the nicest blurred backgrounds. I've only used the Nikon lens, but I would not see a large difference between these two. Although you can get a decent blur (use these six steps - kzitem.info/news/bejne/p52mrpiDsahjpZw) I would not recommend these for that purpose.

What would be the best Nikon VR lens for video? I have the 5500 and the 10-24, which, however, does not have VR. I suspect that VR is important, in particular for videos. Thank you for your reply.
@MaartenHeilbron
6 жыл бұрын
I would not consider VR a must have for video - however that lens may be too wide for general use. Good for real estate and wide shots though. In general, VR does not provide enough or suitable stabilization for video. A tripod, or a gimbal, does.

Hello again , I am watching all your videos , I have bought the d3400 but I cannot understand how some friends of mine manage to take photos with their iPhones better than I do with my d3400... is the iPhone better that the stock d3400 with the stock lens ? Is it that I don't know how to use it yet ? Or is it that I don't know how to judge a good photo ? Thank you
@MaartenHeilbron
7 жыл бұрын
All of those are possible ... understanding the technology of photography and the features of a camera are only part of photography. Developing an eye for an image, a creative sense of composition and a flair for capturing the decisive moment are all part of a great photo. A better camera doesn't make anyone a better photographer - but it can be a more powerful and capable tool to create images beyond those a cellphone or lesser device can.

Very informative. Thanks for the video. A quick question: With my current budget, I can either go with D7200 with 18-140mm OR go buy an inferior body like D5300 with 18-140mm and spend the deference on a basic prime lens like 50mm f/1.8 (or 35mm f/1.8 maybe?). Which way would you go for?
@MaartenHeilbron
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I'd take the less expensive body and the better lens. A less expensive model still has a good sensor (and better than the kit lens can take advantage of) just fewer features.

hi thanks for your answer. Just want to ask you one more question. I do have Nikon d5300 as I mentioned you before, I do videography most of the time. so which lens is good for that ? I mean I do have 18-55mm VR, 18-200mm, one prime lens 50mm as well. 50 mm does great shoot but it is 50mm. I want to know which lens is best that covers landscape in HD mode.?
@MaartenHeilbron

It doesn't take much to be good for landscape - but obviously a wider angle and higher quality will help you capture all the detail in a scene.
