I agree with Pink Berkley Tie-Dye. I grew them for the first time last season, and they were my favorite. My father had come for a visit and when he ate one he told me "I could live on that!". High praise indeed. Plant produced well in tough conditions: short growing season, high elevation, low nighttime temps (mid to high 40's for much of the season) and only 4-5 hours of sunlight per day. Could not recommend more highly!

I appreciate a taste test video. Not much point growing food if it isn't worth eating. I grew PInk Brandywine this year and the fruits were fantastic and for large toms, they ripened really early -well before the dreaded blight could ht. Late-ripening fruits are not for me because of this and about half of my plants nowadays are blight-resistant types, not heritage varieties.

Thanks Lin, I think the UK managed to avoid a blight disaster quite well this year, unlike 2021! I grow all my toms indoors because of the blight. Any plants outside always succumb and I really like the blight resistant Crimson Blush F1.

@@veggieplot Thanks! I started some seeds from a tomato called Sunset from a tomato I got in the grocery store which came from Canada. The tomato is a beautiful yellow and orange color. All seeds germinated in peat pellets and are looking healthy under a grow light. I also ordered some seedling Cherokee Purple plants from Tractor Supply and am waiting for those to arrive. That is my favorite variety that I've ever tasted so far. I first got one at an outdoor Farmer's Market and was really surprised that it tasted naturally salty without my having to put salt on it.

Did the Berkley Tie Dye during the dreaded summer of 2021 in southern England. Too much rain and cool temps, meaning everything got decimated by blight. Never even got a BTD to harvest. Same with most things. Then I never grew them again this year, in what was a FAR better summer for tomatoes here. Best performers were Andes Horn, White Tomesol & Apero F1 cherry. I am just sorting out my seeds for next year. I'm going to start earlier so I can be harvesting in June, rather than August.

Also did my first currant tomato this year - white currant. Similar to yourself, I won't bother with them again. They produced well but they are just so small that they aren't worthwhile. You would need to pick and eat about 4 x as many as a regular, decent sized cherry to get the same amount. I felt that it was really a waste of time and felt quite underwhelming.

I believe it’s generally thought that heirloom taste better on the whole than F1 varieties, especially when it comes to tomatoes. I’m not convinced it applies to everything though as I’ve grown horrible tasting heritage cucumbers and delicious F1 melons, so I guess it varies. What I do like about heritage varieties is that you can save seed and regrow and they should be the same as the parent which doesn’t work for F1.

@@veggieplot I don’t have a specific recipe. Yes, slice the unripe beefsteak tomatoes maybe a half-inch or less thick. Make a mixture of equal parts all-purpose (aka plain) flour and cornmeal. Season the mixture well with salt, pepper, and paprika. Dredge the tomato slices in the seasoned mixture. Pan fry in oil, turning when golden brown. They can be eaten as-is or with whatever condiment you think tastes good. I like something that is sweet and spicy so I often mix a jam and a mustard together.

ANYONE GOT DISEASE RESISTANT PLANTER FRIENDLY CHERRY VARIETY SUGGESTIONS ? I grow in 5 gal pails ATM, so my bugbear has always been fusillium wilt (I know why too: soil in above ground pails is in the 75F+ danger zone, whereas inground soil is far cooler). If a variety doesnt have at least moderate+ resistance, I cant/wont roll the dice on it. Anyway, this year im starting early from seed, indoors, to jump the gun on the inevitable disease. Ive yet to find a container friendly variety that's bulletproof to fusillium AND has great flavor & yeild, but ive narrowed the field: Besides jalapenos, my current fave cherry tomato varieties (for 7 yrs) are: > Sun Sugar (from Bonne - I think it's a slightly more resistant offshoot of Sun Gold ... my score: flavor A+, yield A-, fusillium resistance B/B+). > Super Sweet 100 (flavor A-, yield A+, fusillium resistance A-) Ive looked at the catalog on Johnnieseeds, and the following look promising. I may try one or two. > Edox > Sunpeach > Toronjina Comments & suggestions would be highly welcome.
