NOTE: There is no shame in not going into university. Despite what you may hear from society or your parents, you DO NOT need a university degree to have a good job and be successful. You DO NOT have to follow in the footsteps of your friends and classmates due to the fear of being left out. At this age, there are countless options for all the things that you could be doing. This is the prime age at which you can take risks and pursue the dreams that you have been contemplating but are too scared to act upon. Whether it be starting a KZitem channel, writing a blog or anything "risky" in the eyes of society, this is an age where YOU CAN take that risk. Consider all the factors that I discussed in the video and take your time in making your decision.
In this video, I talk about some of the key factors to consider when choosing your university. Whether it be choosing universities in Canada, or anywhere else in the world, this advice should be helpful. At this time of year, I know you guys are stressed out because of university decisions and I want to help you to make a better decision on where you will spend the next 4 (or more) years of your life!
TIMESTAMPS
0:19 - 1. CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS
0:55 - 2. LOCATION
1:24 - 3. SIZE (of the school)
2:10 - 4. ENVIRONMENT
2:46 - 5. PRESTIGE ISN'T EVERYTHING
3:20 - 6. CAREER OPPORTUNITY
3:42 - 7. FINANCES
Here is what I believe you should consider:
1. UNIVERSITY IS NOT YOUR ONLY OPTION - Going to university is one of many options that you can choose from. Although societal or parental pressures can make you think otherwise, there are countless other options out there like community college, a gap year or going straight into the workforce. Going into university is a huge opportunity cost of both your time and money, so really explore your options before making this huge decision.
2. LOCATION - Definitely a large part of any university decision, you should consider how easy it is to get home to your family for the holidays! I live 3 hours (on a good day without traffic) away from school and I didn't expect homesickness to be this bad, so you should really consider this factor. Another thing about location is whether or not you enjoy the city environment. If you are genuinely interested in your city, you'll likely have more fun and enjoy university more. I suggest you take a tour of the universities that you are seriously trying to get into.
3. SIZE OF THE SCHOOL - This is entirely up to the student's preference. A larger school could provide more opportunities for extracurricular activities due to having more resources and students, whereas a smaller school could provide a more tight-knit community of professors and students. Weigh the pros and cons here, it's really up to your own preference.
4. ENVIRONMENT - School environment and culture is huge in determining if you will fit in well with the school. There is no better resource than your alumni of your high school, so keep in touch with them to discuss how the school culture is like and continue to research about school culture (trust me, there are many resources by word of mouth or the internet).
5. PRESTIGE ISN'T EVERYTHING - I cannot express this enough, you can learn pretty much the same things about your major topics of interest from a "less prestigious" school than a more renowned school. I know some people who chose their program/university because of the prestige (myself included) and ended up hating it. However, I was fortunate enough to actually enjoy my university experience thus far. As for you guys, really consider this one.
6. CAREER OPPORTUNITY - Ask yourself, "does this align with my career goals?", "Will this set me up for future success?". It's important to ask these questions because this is mostly what students go into university for. Look into the university's resources for career opportunities. For example, if they have good career guidance/resources or if they offer a co-op program. This is definitely an important factor in deciding how smoothly your career path pans out to be.
7. FINANCES - This one is extremely important, can you afford it? Finances are often overlooked, as most of us have lived our lives without a worry about money. However, at the age of 18 we are now young adults and we should really take charge of our own finances and futures. If you are fortunate enough to have your parents pay for your education, you should discuss the finances with them. Additionally, you should try to educate yourself in personal finance, and that is also why this channel was created. I hope that I can continue to help you guys with this factor (though all the other ones are extremely important too).
