I mix with Dynaudio LYD48's in a treated room that is fairlly big (about 20 m2/215 square feet) and I have a Dynaudio 18s sub on its way. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD600 for reference/cross check. I had a small untreated room with Yamaha HS8's before and the difference is so big that it is beyond words. If I were to invest in one thing only it would be sound treatment. Go buy a pack of Rockwool or whatever (check if your neighbour or anyone has any unused isolation just lying around if you are broke) and just wrap it in some cheap cloth, blankets or whatever and place some in corners, first reflection point and behind the speakers (or where you have space). No need to be all fancy if it is just you in the room. The second thing I would invest in is Sonarworks, and find the mix knob and set it to somewhere between 60 - 80 %, dial in to where your speakers sound the best.

I use Yamaha HS-8's for monitoring and Sennheiser HD600 for headphones. Use to also run a pair of Focal Alpha 65's for checking my mixes but gave them to my son when he started his own home studio

I have a pair of JBL 308 mkii that I cross reference with my AKG K702 headphones using Nx Ocean Way Nashville and/or Nx - Virtual Mix Room. I also have a pair of Alesis Elevate 5's on a Macbook Air in another room that I'll test through when I need a fresh perspective. I'll listen through the Macbook Air's tiny speakers too. 😉

Good Stuff, Bobbby, I've been using Kali V2 8" monitors along side 3.5" presonus monitors for the reasons you mentioned. I also use a presonus T10 sub and just kick that on to check the sub Fq low end for a few minutes. Just getting into SonarWorks Reference. Reference really exposes your monitors short comings and takes some time to get use to. For head phones I'll check a mix on Sony 7506's. I bought the Slate VSX modeling headphone, but think those are useless... for me anyway.

@@RaytownProductions don’t waste your money, Bobby. If you like the way your mixes sound now those headphones won’t improve anything. I regret the purchase to honest.

Hi, Me iK Multimedia micro monitor on mic stand, close the wall with only piaramydal foam, (basso reflex Port on the front), not deep as table so no combfiltering, then corrected with iK Multimedia ARC, alternating with headphones as Superlux HD330 and Monoprice M1070 for mixing and mastering, and Ultrasone proline 550 for tracking, all driven mainly by Focusrite Vrmbox as amp (

I have presonus 3.5 inch speakers, a friend of mind who have yamaha hs8 came to studio and he found presonus 3.5 sounds better an puchy than yamaha hs8. I personally don't like the sound of yamaha hs8 pair. They don't sound tight to me. I, however, like adam a7x pair, which sounds much better and punchy than yamaha pair.

I'm crazy town and use a pair of 1300 watt mackie stage monitors 5 feet away at lower volumes. I use them in case I'm surprise attacked by the asshole drummer such as Lars Ulrich. Otherwise I use normal 15W 3 channel PC speakers.
