Charlie I enjoyed your video. since cousin Scott started growing corn and I've been helping with mowing the stalks I now have a little bit of experience with that particular activity. Put the mower behind the 4020 this year to get up above the dust and it was a much better ride. 🙂🙏🙂

Yeah, it's nice to do (what is for me) the last field work of the year. Kinda brings closure to what has been a good year on the farm. I know you and I are both looking forward to next year. Good to hear from you, my friend.

Thanks, Jan. It really is a good running old tractor. I had it the engine rebuilt in the year 2000, but only have about 1200 hours on that rebuild.

Well, that's one of the reasons I do this channel, to not only tell my story of farming, but to help people understand why we do what we do. And mine is not the only way or "the" way - it's just one way to do it.

Nice sticker! Your mower does a very nice job. I thought about trying my brush mower on corn stalks, but I have a stalk chopper for that. Kind of curious which one would do a better job.
@pagrainfarmer

Yeah, if you do any experimenting to compare, let me know how it turns out. I have a New Idea Cutditioner that would probably work, too, but I never tried it. It's one of those old flail-type mowers.

We only had a 7 ft mower, so instead we set the disc to cut stalks with minimal tillage. Then in spring tear it up.
@pagrainfarmer

I've done it with the disk too, over the years. In my opinion, the rotary mower does a better job and leaves the field looking nicer. However, the disk does a better job of making the surface residue come into contact with the soil.

No. I moldboard plow and worry about erosion over the winter on some of the more hilly ground we have. Although our farm is fairly flat compared to many around.

Well, it's something I've dealt with all my life, so I'm used to it, and it doesn't bother me at all. It's funny to me, though, how many people will visit and refuse to go near the cliff due to the height.

Charlie, nice to see the Oliver tractor back at work. I have a question for you when I was a kid on the farm I know Dad didn't have a rotary cutter like what you're using do you suppose dad might have used a sickle mower to cut the corn stocks? When I was younger when dad was plowing all those corn stalks and build up underneath the plow just like what you're talking about but later on I don't recall that Dad had that same issue so I'm guessing he started cutting it the only thing, I would think of he used a sickle mower. Thanks Michael
@pagrainfarmer

I don't know. I never heard of anyone using a sickle mower. Some people used a flail mower, like New Idea Cutditioner, or a disk, rather than a rotary mower. So, those are possibilities.

Are you really wet now we are and a lot of corn still out here
@pagrainfarmer
10 ай бұрын
We're not extremely wet, but have been having some rain. Pittsburgh had torrential downpours yesterday during the Steeler game, which missed us. There is still a good bit of corn out there. Some of it is due to how well the corn is doing this year, coupled with the fact that the trucks hauling it can't keep up.

Yeah, I read an article by a local sports writer that said they should trade Tomlin. The game has changed over the years, but he has not. In his mind, it's still the same game it was in 2006, which is isn't any more. Belichek up in New England is the same way. Time to move on in both cases (In my humble opinion). @@TheGrumpyFarmer

Good to see you Charlie. Great looking 1650. With all your gas powered tractors what have you found best to run as in fuel to keep all gas engines running so well? Do you run 87 and a stabilizer? Or do you have a home remedy?
@pagrainfarmer

I use regular 87 octane, to which I add octane booster and lead substitute. That's it! The gas today is certainly not as good as it used to be.
