Here's a fun story for you jazz lovers out there. During the late 60's Chris played here in Bristol at a well known jazz pub. He went to his hotel after he played and they said he was too late. So my aunty took him in for the night and he slept on her couch.

Had the pleasure of seeing and meeting chris barber when he played at Nantwich jazz festival one year. As i said to him as we bought a couple of cds from him personally at the stall during the interval. Never saw the best gigs as they were done before i was born, or at least 3 or 4 years after i was born. But he was so approachable, friendly, chatty, it was like meeting your favourite uncle. He said, oh you want that one, and he signed it. I still have it.

Unvergessliche Zeiten. Er war und bleibt ein Juwel = Klenot.

I first listened to Chris Barbers Jazz band in 1953 at the Fishmongers Arms pub in Wood Green North London.Ottilie Patterson whom he later married ,sang blues. The hall where they played was at the side of the pub,it was gas lit and the stage lighting was candles on barrels at the front of the stage.Me and my mates jived all night sweating profusely and loving it.

My lovely Dad joined Chris, and some of his band, in a hotel in Stockport in the early eighties where they were all staying, for a few beers and laughs. Dad said Chris Barber was very nice, and was encouraging when he was told that my Dad had a son who played trombone(me). It is wonderful to hear that such a fine musician was also such a gentleman. RIP DAD and Chris Barber. This music will always bring you back to us. Thank you for uploading.

Of course it is easy to say this was one of the greatest "jazz bands" from old school and Ian Wheeler had the most unusual styles of playing the clarinet when you view some of the greatest going back to Bennie Goodman, Artie Shaw, Pete Fountain, etc. etc. The Bassist seems to have a great time on all songs.
