I remember this story and was disappointed that R1 didn't give him Fridays off lol because I loved his breakfast shows.

Sadly Chris Evans was one of those who progressed the emphasis of "music radio" away from music and toward a kind of middle ground thing that alienated a portion of its audience. I like talk radio, I like music radio, but stop-start music radio is not what Radio 1 set out to be and sorry, but it doesn't float my boat at all. The awful posse format with DJ + syncophants just makes it worse. I know that truckloads of people love what Evans does and he is very very good at it - but it's not what I want when I tune to something called a "music" station - I'd far sooner listen to some continuous music streaming service. As to this specific episode, it's a fair bet that it was deliberate because he couldn't do the early mornings. People he had previously worked with at Virgin all said that had trouble getting up in the mornings, back then anyway, and he was very often late or even no-show. I'm guessing he got caught between his ego not wanting to turn down "the" job for a radio DJ and his inability to change his late-night lifestyle and just wanted out. Just a guess, but it fits the facts as we know them!

Chris Evans was the reason I gave up on Radio 1. I'm used to a bit of chat then a record, at least 12 songs an hour. His ego waffle allowed as few as three songs in a half hour. From what I've heard (especially when the brilliant indie station Xfm got shut down), Chris Moyles is very much the same... or he tries to be.

@@arthurnibble4763 Yes xFM (which I listened to a lot in the 2000s and into the early 2010s) was pretty much what IMO a commercial music station ought to be. 11-14 songs an hour and minmal chat breaks. Radio 1 - with no commercials to accomodate should be playing close to 15 songs an hour to be considered (by me anyway!) a music station.

BBC Radio 1 missed the trick...If the BBC had sanctioned Chris Evans's friday off, they could have had the money can't buy crossover media (tv) attention for his Radio Show...Thus, creating a bigger audience. Sometimes...YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE...no pun intended.

Am not surprised at this at all! Really there is nothing new & some things just haven't changed regarding Chris Evans! He had a habit & still has I believe of 'putting his foot in it' & saying inappropriate things about people on air & liking the sound of his own voice! You only had to listen to BBC Radio 2 when he used to host the Breakfast Show...say no more!

Marmite Moyles, I can't stand the bloke and find him so annoying. He's the king of smug. he's got this much '' talent. I really struggle to understand what people find funny about him. Fortunately i don't listen to radio 1 but he pops up everywhere it freaks me out.

He is the BEST that R1 ever had to do breakfast. Evans was rude and offensive, just like Sara Cox was when she did it. Difference is he still is,Sara toned down her act and is doing brilliantly now at R2.

He kept pushing the boundaries of what's acceptable, and he had a habit of bringing the people he worked with to tears. Trevor Dann would tell him to pipe down and cool it and stop playing stupid records on several occasions and Matthew Bannister wouldn't have it when Chris Evans complained to him. He also berated his bosses on air, called listeners "thick", and got away with tasteless offensive things on air, and he wouldn't be controlled by anyone as he thought he could get away with everything under an independent production company but when it came to the ultimate trump card of requesting Fridays off in order to do the television show, Matthew Bannister turned rank on him, and refused the request and told him to exercise his 'notice to quit', but Chris pulled the ultimate blinder, by telling Matthew Bannister to "fuck off" storming out.

The old Showbiz saying "be nice to people on the way up, cos you will need their goodwill on the way down" was never more applicable than to Chris Evans. Maybe he learned that lesson.
