I wish the art of fighting was something we focused on in the States. There's very little attention paid to equipping the youth with the ability to defend themselves, or others that may need help. Knowing how to use your body, and the weapons you're particular frame holds is empowering. People are always afraid of the big, imposing guy, but it's really the smaller people who can be a huge problem. Speed, volume, and precision are often times more advantageous than raw power alone. I'm not a badass or anything, but the small amount of experience I've had by either participating in, or watching fights really helped to open my eyes to the inaccurate perception of what it takes to be successful in a self defense situation. I would recommend for every able bodied person to train in Jiu Jitsu and Boxing as a means to learn discipline, defense, and confidence. It doesn't have to be something that you devote thousands of hours to over a period of years. It actually doesn't take very long to pick up the basics of both styles, and is a fantastic way to get your exercise in. Just a couple days a week for one or two hours can be sufficient. Really the most important aspect of learning these, and basically any artforms, is practical application. To successfully use these methods and techniques in a high stress, potentially life or death situation, you need to be familiar and comfortable with any position you may end up in during a fight. If you have to spend time to think about what your next move is, or what you have to do to prevent your attacker from gaining the upper hand, that's time and energy wasted, prolonging the altercation, and draining the much needed strength you'll need to subdue the attacker. Each and every second that you devote to planning what comes next only serves to quickly bring on muscle fatigue, making it far more likely you won't come out the victor.
