I used to love watching much quicker defenders get visibly angry when he beat them one-on-one to the hoop. Sometimes his drives looked like they were happening in slow motion but his footwork was impeccable and he had dozens of subtle little tricks to get defenders a little off balance . . . beat quickness every time.

There were rumors of alcohol and drug use. NBA teams didn’t like local players because of mobster, gang and seedy elements that could influence outcomes. Unless they were coach’s sons, legacy players or maybe an athlete or crowd pleaser who can’t play, legitimate players never get drafted by the local teams.

I still remember the day he signed with SJU. I was sky high ! Newsday , mostly a Long Island paper, ran a big article on the signing of a Long Island Lutheran Guy, Bill Wennington and added a small note about Mullin signing. I was always a city guy from HS and my friends were Long Island guys. They were all worked up about Wennington and Mullin was barely spoken about by them, I let them know the big signing was Mullin, all respect due Wennington but Mullin was the guy who was going to put SJU over the top, He was the NYC MVP, a city champ one , of the greatest NYC HS players, no comparison with LI ball. They just didn't know better. Long before his freshman year was over the same guys were going crazy over Chris and stayed crazy until he retired as one of the all time NBA greats to go along with all time HS and college greats. A real thrill to follow his career.

I always laugh when people say "this guy or that guy" should have been on the dream team instead of mullin. (Most forget nique and worthy were hurt). People act like he was some bit player. Some say it was because he was white, and all that dumb shit. Mullin by the end of the 80s had come into his own, and through the mid 90s was one of the most dynamic scorers in the game. The Run TMC warriors were legit as hell, and he was the spearhead. With Bird hurt, Mullin was the perfect next pick to take advantage of the zone defenses in the olympics.

Fortunate to see him play live with the GSW and countless times on TV. He did things with the ball in NBA games you saw the Harlem Globe Trotters do. Add all the "too slow, can't jump" BS he has to be one of the most underrated by fans (not by his peers) players ever. His contemporaries Jordan Magic Bird knew he could play, thats why he made the Dream Team. He was one of the best Scorers and Best shooter of his era but never a ball hog he'd toss dimes that equaled his shots

Wow that intro ripped right from Larry birds video I got with sports illustrated back in the 90s. You could pick from birds or magic Johnson always showtime video. They changed a few words. I remember the whole tape. "If you were to create the perfect basketball fable it might begin in a small town in Indiana, where young boys grow up with a ball in their hands a basket out back and drams of glory in their hearts, but there would be one boy who would continue to practice long after the others went away and in those lonely hours as he honed his skills he would find the essence of the game and in many ways himself he would play with the passion of the under dog, the purity of tradition and a vision that was his alone. He would touch the hearts of ask those who watched him play the game and leave behind a sense of wonder and a legend". Holy shit I just had a flashback.
