On an icy Sunday morning at the end of a weather challenged tour this past winter, my pal Mike Elias invited me to stop by his glorious shop in Portland, Oregon called Ship John to have strong cup of coffee and a seat on the Stitchin’ Horse to testify in the the healing power of music. I gladly obliged. What transpired were some raw and honest off the cut versions of some songs that I’m eternally motivated to sing loudly, far, and wide. Testifying and storytelling through song to promote empathy, freedom, and understanding. I was compelled to share this version of ‘Tulsa Town’ then and now, with you.
As we commemorate the 103rd remembrance of the Tulsa Race Massacre this week, let us pause and reflect on the fact that the headlines in 1921 described this mass murder of hundreds of innocent black men, women, and children, as an overzealous act of justice. I frequently wonder what people will think, a century from now, of the headlines we are writing today. Let us remember that words can be used to either reveal or hide the truth.
I along with Ship John invite you to join us with a contribution to ‘Greenwood Rising’ who educates Oklahomans and Americans about the Race Massacre and its impact on the state and Nation; remembers its victims and survivors and creates an environment conductive to fostering sustainable entrepreneurship and heritage tourism within the Greenwood District specifically, and North Tulsa. - GreenwoodRising.org
