By far and away the sexxiest sounding female vocalist of my time, that deep husky low end and incredible power and range made Chrissie a legend. Amazing singer.

I was 17, and at the top of the stairs in the audience. She rocked it so hard and I was transfixed. She walked over to the desk on fidgeted with her pick. I kept saying "put down the pick, put down the pick". At the very end she put the pick on the desk and stood up and waved goodnight to the crowd. The lights went on, and the audience gets cleared pretty quickly as the band plays an outro. I wanted that pick and was singular about it. The whole audience exits out to the top. I somehow just hugs to the right and went against the traffic. By the time I got to the bottom of the stairs the last people of the front row were exiting. The final two came out as I was coming down and in a perfect moment they went down onto the stage floor instead of up, they were special guests, an older couple. As the NBC page clicked open the ropes to allow them in I found myself walking right in along with them. Eight steps later and I was up at dave's desk, grabbed Chrissie's pick, and turned around to see the view from there (wow). At that moment I had no more plan, well I never did, but I have always snuck in well. This one was the best ever. I went over and said hi to the band as they struck their final note. They gave a polite nod as I have learned one gets when they don't know who you are but assume i supposed to be there and could be related to somebody higher up. i then turned around and since the audience was clear that whole thing was closed so I just went through those doors we were all familiar with. The Pretenders, inus Chrissie were back there so I said a couple words to them. I knew where they played the night before so I asked them, once again they obliged a nice banter and answer and otherwise were just standing around that weird hallway, which was surreal to be wandering through. after another minute i wandered through to the elevators where i found my friends who I had gone with. one of which interned at SNL and said "there you are, I wanted to introduce you to Dave!" As if it couldn't had gotten better. She introduced me in some side room that was filled gear. He shook my hand, was super polite, and then grabbed a styrofoam commissary tray and signed, in Huge Purple sharpie "to Kevin, Hope you survive the meal - David Letterman" We left and I brought the tray to my dorm and showed my friends. NYC was the greatest fun. I called my brother and told him to look for me because sure enough I was in an earlier segment when I got to stick my head out in the aisle (as a dummy head rolled down the stairs, I hogged the shot). Would love to see that segment. The pick and signed tray and decades long gone, but I should have treasured them, they were both exceptional.

Hadn't looked at any responses to my videos in a while. Thanks so much gubban159. The first Pretenders album was my favorite too, and this is one of my favorite songs. Saw The Pretenders in Milwaukee on their first tour of the US, my ticket says Thurs. April 24, 1980 at a medium sized theater/bar called The Palms. What a fantastic show it was, one of my all-time favorite concerts.

Loved the Tense Experts and The Oil Tasters. Caleb, the sax player for The Oil Tasters was a friend of mine. Seems we were the only 2 saxophonists in the punk scene. He did sound for many bands including the Femmes when they toured Europe. He occasionally played sax with them. Remember Century Hall? The Rock-A-Dials played there a lot, were some of our best shows. Early 80's were some of the best times in my life. Thanks for the good wishes. The Pretenders show will be great. Have fun!

Wish I could see them this Tuesday. Spent my whole life in Milwaukee/Waukesha area but moved away for work last July. Now live in Charleston. Cool the Pretenders discovered the Femmes. A rockabilly band I played in the early 80's, The Rock-A-Dials, practiced on a weekday in the basement of The Starship on 4th and Michigan. After practice I would sometimes see the Femmes playing upstairs to a very small crowd. They were virtually unknown then, even locally. Give me an update on the Pretenders show

Pretenders at SF Civic in 1981. Chrissie always had a strict no cameras policy but a friend and I between us snuck in his camera and a few lenses and were a few feet back from the stage. Pretenders come on and Greg is shooting some pics, Chrissie sees him and leans over with a big Johnny Cash fuck you finger salute then during the guitar break goes to the side of the stage and motions towards us with her head to ine of her crew. This guy and another guy start making their way towards us through the crowd but while this is going on Greg advances the film and puts it into one of those small round containers with the plastic cap which i stick in my pocket while Greg puts a new roll of film into the camera just before the security guys arrive and pull us out of the crowd and into the foyer where the security guy orders Greg to give him the film. Greg says no, the guy grabs the camera and Greg pulls it back and says ok, jesus, calm down.. Gives the guy the blank roll of film, the guy exposes it and throws it down then throws us out of the building. Greg develops the film later and still has that great shot of Chrissie leaning down flipping us off, her mouth forming the f as she's telling us to fuck off.

I'm a Dusty Springfield fan too. There hadn't been many great female pop/rock singers since the 60's until The Pretenders came onto the scene. I sure took notice. Saw The Pretenders in Milwaukee on their first tour of the US, just found my ticket, Thurs. April 24, 1980 at a medium sized theater/bar called The Palms. This was when "Brass in Pocket" first hit our radio. Didn't think that song was a good choice to represent the bands music. I liked the song, and most everything they've done.
