The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) is celebrating 75 years of cutting-edge member education, strong advocacy, and devoted family medicine leadership. What better way to mark this momentous occasion than to highlight the heart of the OAFP- its members.
Throughout this series, OAFP members from all stages of the family medicine workforce will share their personal stories in choosing family medicine, how their career has impacted their lives, and how the OAFP has supported them along the way.
Family Medicine Story - Christen Johnson, MD, EdD, MHP, FAAFP
Dr. Johnson grew up knowing she wanted to be a doctor. Her passion of treating the underserved and interest in obstetrics, as well as adolescent medicine, lead her to mentors that showed her the breadth and depth of family medicine.
Dr. Johnson is the faculty lead for Culturally Responsible Curricula in Medicine at the Wright State University (WSU) Boonshoft School of Medicine, as well as an adjunct professor. She is also a practicing family physician and director of medical education and research for Heart of Ohio Family Health, a group of Federally Qualified Health Centers throughout central Ohio. In the summer, she precepts first- and second-year medical students for the OAFP Foundation’s Leroy A. Rodgers, MD, Preceptorship Program.
Within the OAFP, Dr. Johnson serves as chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workgroup and is a member of the National Action Committee. Nationally, she is the appointed new physician representative of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness in Family Medicine, as well as a post-graduate member of the Committee on Medical Education for the National Medical Association.
“…It was amazing to be ushered into this organization that not only supported me as a medical student, but also throughout my residency. The Academy has also given me opportunities to be a leader at the national level,” said Dr. Johnson.
“Being a part of the OAFP has been a joy and it’s something that I recommend to students when I hear they are interested in leadership and staying here [Ohio].”
Dr. Johnson earned her Masters of Public Health and her medical degree from the WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine. She completed an Urban Family Medicine Track at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program with a concentration in health equity leadership. She recently earned her Doctor of Education degree in Educational and Professional Practice, Multicultural and Anti-Racist Education from Antioch University in Seattle, WA.
