I’m a Brit living in Canada and last year I went to my Canadian partners house for Christmas dinner. No roast potatoes, no stuffing, no pigs in blankets. The holy trinity completely missing from the table. I still haven’t fully recovered and I never plan on spending Christmas in Canada ever again. As an Englishman that lived in New York for five years, I can tell you that they do indeed have pigs in blankets. It isn't the same though. Their's is essentially a sausage roll with the ends of the sausage sticking out. Also, I have fond memories of pigs in blankets as a child in the UK as far back as the 80's. So you might want to be sitting down for this comment but im one of those people who isn't really a fan of gravy the only gravy I like is KFC gravy but i also don't like cranberry or bread sauce so yes most of the time I have my christmas dinner or any roast for that matter dry...... Gravy deserved a high mark as it's had to rescue many an overcooked, dry turkey. With Robbie on roasties vs "nasty nips" as they were referred to in my childhood, with my mum deliberately disguising them as roasties. Grown to appreciate them more now my tastes have matured tbf, but still roasties the best damn thing on that plate by miles. Love sprouts too and we have them throughout the winter season whilst they're available (which is why they're traditional); there's a bag of them in the fridge right now - just checked: forgot we had them for tea tonight! Another shout for bread sauce; my partner _loves_ it as she's from further back into the 70s than me, so her attachment is stronger. She always makes too much of it though, so it can glue up like a porridge. She'll have it with most roasts throughout the year. She's another one that _loves_ mash so will have that as often as she can, but that's a lot of added faff & cooking space getting taken up. She's fond of the cranberry sauce too but I take your point about it's similarity with jam. Can't believe your generic veg didn't include carrots & broccoli, looked quite sparse without them. The only point I can truly side with Alfie though is the 'sod tradition' attitude as we've chopped & changed with ours to suit what we actually want or can be arsed with, depending on if we're having Christmas at home just the two of us or with family or whatever. Recent years we've taken to pubbing it with the family on Boxing Day instead, so this year my pre-ordered 'Xmas' menu from the Queen's Head, Hethersett is: Leek & potato soup (w/warm baguette) Phanaeng vegetable curry (w/basmati rice, poppadom & naan bread) Panettone chocolate & orange bread & butter pudding (w/custard)
