I just got back from a vacation in Japan. Some of us asked our guide what the Japanese relation to Christmas was, since most Japanese are either Shintoists or Buddhists. He said "We don't pay any attention to the religious aspect of Christmas." I laughed and said "Oh, so pretty much like North America, then."

hmmm,... I'm visiting a relative in Osaka right now. I think the Christian churches here and in Sakai will celebrate... anyway, it seems strange when people say Japan is Buddhist ... which type? We are Soto-zen but there are many varieties ...

@@towada1066 Officially, 80% of Japan are Shintoists. But Shinto is considered more of a lifestyle than an actual religion.

@@riffgroove hmmm,... I think the statement is not correct. Yesterday there were many worshipers at Minatogawa Shrine. Today my relative wants to go to worship at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto.

@towada1066 I didn't say that there aren't any Christians in Japan. Obviously there are. They are just a very small portion of the population.

So I'm an American, and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is an American chain. We do not associate KFC and Christmas together. Lol.

Turkey is just simply not widely eaten in Japan. You will NEVER find turkey on the menu in a Japanese restaurant.

" Japan is not a Christian country. " ... hmmm ... this isn't really true. Christianity has been in Japan since 1500's. Especially in Sakai it is typical to see nuns and churches. There are some silly statements in the video; Tanabata is much more romantic than Christmas I think. Anyway, for comparison, Marunouchi illumination was nice this month but nothing compares to Kobe Luminarie. I think the most traditional Christmas thing is Beethoven 9th Symphony. This year I saw Sado Yutaka conduct so it was incredible !! (^_^) ... じゃッ!大阪から、メリークリスマス!ちなみに、「Perfect Days」という映画を見た、... 感度した、ちょっと泣いた ... (-_-) ...

That Beethoven concert sounds magical! only around 1% of the population in Japan are Christians.. therefore it's not considered a christian country right?

@@HappyGaijin ww! ... I don't know what percentage is needed to acquire any designation (^_^) ... hmmm,... Christians felt strongly enough that they fought in the Shimabara Rebellion. Even today certain new-thought religions are inspired by Christianity. Anyway, I think maybe you will enjoy Suntory Hall in Akasaka,... (especially if you want to go where there are no tourists!)
