*CHRISTOCENTRIC MEAL* *DR ABEL DAMINA* *TUESDAY APRIL 12, 2022* *WALKING IN THE SPIRIT* *Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.* Prior to mentioning the fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5, some verses before (verse 16) he had begun talking about “Walking in the spirit” The word “walk” used here implies to tread a path created for one. It was used to refer to the conduct of the believer who is born of the spirit, in the spirit. Therefore, to walk in the spirit here will mean to conduct oneself after his nature, one that is born of the spirit. The same word “walk” was used in other of Paul’s epistles to refer to the conduct of the man born of the spirit: Ephesians 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, He says to the believer to not walk as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind. Note also the fact that he had described this walking after the course of this world by the children of disobedience (those that have not believed the gospel). The term “walk” refers to one’s conduct. He describes these folks further as being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them. Now, a few verses after, he further explained the believer’s state which should inform his walk, his conduct: Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; Vs 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; Vs 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Vs 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Vs 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Observe that the phrases “that ye put off…” (verse 22) and “that ye put on…” seem to point to a present or continual act, however a very similar narrative is seen in his letter to the Colossians. Colossians 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; Vs 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: The words used here are “ye have put off…” and “have put on…”. Thus with this understanding, in Ephesians 4:22-24, Paul was referring to the fact that we have (having put off) put off the old man, and we have put on (having put on) the new man. Thus Paul’s basis for teaching walking in the spirit was to first establish who the believer is: the new man, one that has put off the old man. He described the new man as being created after God in righteousness and true holiness. We can glean from this therefore that the new birth, being born of the spirit also explains the fact that the believer is born of God, a new creature in Christ Jesus. The believer therefore must first understand and affirm who he is in Christ and then walk in the light of the same. Philemon 1:6 That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. The believer’s walk therefore will be effective to the degree that he acknowledges (precisely) every good thing which is in him in Christ. The believer’s nature, the fact that he is born of the spirit, the spirit lives in him is the basis for which he can walk in the spirit (to conduct himself after his nature). Therefore, the instruction Paul gave afterward in Ephesians 4 were based on the fact that he had shown them their nature. In verse 25, he started by saying “wherefore put away lying….” The word “Wherefore” implies based on what had been said previously. Thus he says to put away lying because we have put away the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. Then in verse 26, he says to not be angry and sin, and not allow the sun go down on your wrath. He further says in verse 28 that those that used to steal should not do so any longer, rather to give themselves to honest work to earn a living and to give to those in need. We can see that the statement to not give place to the devil (verse 27) will relate to what he was discussing with regards to the believer’s conduct. Also, he goes forward to address how the believer ought to guard against corrupt communication, but rather speak words that will edify and minister grace to the hearers. The context of verse 22-30 therefore addresses the believer’s conduct; his walk. The believer can walk in the spirit because he is born of the spirit, the spirit lives in him! Confession: “The spirit lives in me, therefore I can walk in the spirit. I am not walking to become, but because I am. This is my nature. I walk in the light of who I am”
