Christophe Dugarry came to Barcelona at the summer of 1997 window transfer, hoping to establish himself at the Camp Nou with a view to being a prominent member of France's World Cup squad for the following summer's tournament on home soil. Dugarry made his debut in Supercopa de Espanã against Real Madrid, playing as a winger, leaving a good impression. But things went downhill after that.
Dugarry had a turbulent relation with Louis Van Gaal, Barcelona's coach, who used to play Dugarry many times as a midfielder, or even as a defensive midfielder. The unhappy Dugarry became desperate when France's coach Aime Jacquet said the french players had to be first-choice at their clubs on the first day of 1998 in order to play the World Cup. Dugarry had to plead for Van Gaal to let him leave, even though Van Gaal tried to convince him to stay, saying "I believe in you".
In the end, Dugarry ultimately joined Marseille in December 1997, and went on to help France win the 1998 World Cup and then Euro 2000.
