@Karlopeter1 I think you would find that Hitchens himself would say his life had great purpose, meaning and hope....to HIM. And that certainly is what counts. What purposes and hope is a life lived waiting for jesus or to die and play a harp? What purpose then life at all???

@trythinkingnow:Who told you the fairy tale of dying and playing a harp man? Hey honestly man I am just saying that having a subjective purpose in life doesn't make it objective therefore giving you HOPE in life! Atheism claims that there is no purpose of being on this planet...there never was one or ever will be...so I just always think WHAT'S THE POINT THEN if your limited few years on this earth is just another cycle in history... subjective purposes change constantly, therefore worth living?

Great post! I always focused on the content of Hitchen's speeches debates and conversations, but now I can also just simply enjoy and appreciate the tones and nuances of his voice (I can't believe Bryn Terfel's 'Myfanwy' just started playing on my ipod - might have to stop writing to wipe the dust that's just landed in my eye...).

@Karlopeter1 "What's the point?"... The pursuit of happiness, and defefending other's rights to pursue it, give my life meaning. Conversly, the belief in something you simply do not know exists (btw, how subjective is that?!) seems like a pretty pointless exercise to me.

Ironic - in many ways OUR voice has lost HIS voice. I hope Mr Hitchens grasps the amzing positive influence he has been in many lives. Religion is poison.
