“Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll “Vacillation”, an understanding by Chris Landau. May 2, 2020. Revised October 18, 2020. Version 5, I changed my interpretation to the present tense. ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves. It's terrible when elusive thoughts Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: Churn and cycle in the mind: All mimsy were the borogoves, All misty are the paths, And the mome raths outgrabe. Clear paths unreachable. “Beware the Jabberwock, my son! "Beware of Indecision, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Acts of anger, traps of ties! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun Beware the Flitting doubts, and avoid The frumious Bandersnatch!” The nebulous Tie-me-downs!" He took his vorpal sword in hand; He takes his ego-id in hand; Long time the manxome foe he sought- For ages, he fights his manhood destroyer- So rested he by the Tumtum tree. He rests, his Tummy-tension, cloaked. And stood awhile in thought. And stands awhile to wonder. And, as in uffish thought he stood, While in indecisive thought he stands, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, His Waver resolves, passion lights his eyes, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, Burning through his wooden stance, And burbled as it came! And boiling as it blows! One, two! One, two! And through and through One two! One two! The thoughts tear through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! His vibe springs back! He left it dead, and with its head. He destroys his doubt, and owns his head. He went galumphing back. Bounding, his boy is back. “And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? "And have you smashed your Vacillation? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! Give me a hug, my ecstatic lad! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” Oh fantastic day! Hurrah! Hooray! He chortled in his joy. He dazzles, dimpling in delight. ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves. It’s hazy, with intangible thoughts. Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: That still twirl and twist the mind: All mimsy were the borogoves, All murky are the destinations, And the mome raths outgrabe. But the clear dreams shine through.
