The Tiger Moth is a tad different to WWI warplanes.... Its more advanced despite being a biplane, and unlike many of the aircraft of 1914 - 1918 is a stable platform that is relatively easy to fly. Its WHY it served as a Trainer for so long. Compare that to a Sopwith Camel.... That thing would kill you extremely quickly if you underestimated it, especially on take off or landing.

Thank you for all the likes. I was conceived and born during the Second World War years, and my Dad was heavy in the thick of it shooting down enemy planes in North Africa, when he was given, with some other of the Allied forces a reprieve from the fighting. The leave was to fly to Mombasa for a couple of weeks. He cabled my Mom in Cape Town and said it was time now to make a son! She flew up in a flying boat... So say no more! I am convinced that... what is in the minds and hearts of one's parents at the time of conception determines the character of the child to be born!

I remember seeing this when I was a kid. It's an outstanding film, that gets under the veneer of the historical picture of the War. It gives a feeling of the airborne warfare, the trauma of being borne down on by these huge planes and the fragility of the exposed pilots to bombardment, machine gun fire and engine fires. The callousness of the commanding classes, and the realities of PTSD that were just not acknowledged. The effects are impressive for the 70s as well.

Those movies made back then. Didn't have the budgets or the luxury of having real or reproduction aircraft that looked the period. So you have to give them a little grace. Hoping the story will make up for it. Even other movies then lacked tanks or vehicles to fit the periods as well. One can overlook that. Sometimes, the newer ones with cgi are nice, but lack technical skill and knowledge of the aircraft, etc. used back then or how they worked. If you enjoy it. That's all that should count. The cast was important names for their time. So, someone thought highly in the making of this film.

Yeah, Thumbs Up. I became a pilot when I was a kid and read all the books about World War One, and Two, Aviation. Yeah, there were a lot of casualties. They would celebrate the Aces for the number of other pilots they killed, but there were Aces on both sides. Kids first starting out had to be very lucky to survive against those who 'knew the ropes', so to speak. Croft seemed to be a good shot. That seemed to be important. They say that Baron Von Richthofen, the German lead Ace, had been a horrible pilot, technically, but was a remarkably good shot, both in hunting and in flying, that he had a talent for quickly getting the crosshairs on a target and pulling the trigger at just the right time. But he got killed too, downed by an Australian, I think, a man named Bishop who was also a good shot. But the men on the ground had it worse, that is, going over the top of the trenches to run across mine fields in the face of machine gun fire, while artillery is blowing up everything around you. Entire regiments would be wiped out before breakfast. At least the pilots would get to make a pretty flight before dying. Thumbs up for the free movie.

Was enjoying the film until they showed the pilots pulling a trigger on the joystick. That technology had not been invented yet. Then they depicted a Fokker Eindecker (Dr. 1) as fighting what appeared to be a British SE 5. The Eindecker had been retired for quite some time before the SE 5 was introduced. Being a purist, this was off putting. Otherwise, love CP and McD as actors. McD as Claudius was superb.

Only 4 S.E.5.'s in flying condition when Aces High was being filmed. 2 originals, which lets face it no one was going to lend to a film studio. There were also 2 replica's (no idea if they were a's or b's). One built by a company called Miles and the other by a company whose name escapes me at the moment. There had been 2 Miles built replica's but one had crashed during filming in 1970 killing its pilot. Not sure if either surviving replica was still in flying condition when Aces High was being filmed. Tiger Moths would have been relatively easy to get on the other hand. There were still some hanging around in civilian service and ownership, and they had the advantage of being cheap to operate, and easy to fly.
