Well we need to use car on car crashing but this gives them a base line to work with plus its cheaper to use a deformable barrier to hit a vehicle if they used an actual vehicle the side impact would most likely be worse

These side impact tests are sooooo subjective. It depends on factors such as how tall the rider is, how far he has his seat back and how snug his seatbelt is. For example, in this test the dummy's head hit the intrusion, but if he had been taller it would have hit the upper door jamb and if his seat were farther back, it would have hit the side door pillar, all with very different outcomes.

only real reason that dummy's head hit the side of the door is because its head is on a Spring. a real human neck would not behave like that. a real human neck would Tense up if u want to protect your neck in an accident Scrunch your neck into your shoulders.

Remember the Chrysler 300 was built on the W211 E-Class platform. Chrysler being the cheap brand didn't make airbags as standard. All W211 E-Classes are equipped with airbags across the line. Vs the 300 which only gor a marginal rating, the W211 got a higher acceptable rating.

I saw this exact car (well it was black and had side airbags) get his by a Dodge Ram at 45-50ish mph and it FLEW across the road! The side airbags just gave the mom and child cuts/bruises, but the car was horrific looking. A little more dented than this, but not by much. Labeled totaled on sight. You may escape safe, but anything over a 20mph collision say goodbye chrysler 300

its VERY hard for a car to get a good score for side impacts. A front impact you have a good 5-7 feet of absorption before the object starts reaching you, they can control what collapses and what doesn't so you're less likely to get hurt. A side impact, you have half a foot between you and the object... The only thing I can think of is them making the sides of vehicles extremely sturdy with air bags to prevent you being crushed inside the cab..

@Ozane122 This case with not equipping a car that is priced like the BMW 5, Mercedes E, Audi A6 or Volvo S80, with side torso airbags is just ridiculous. I don't get it. How much would Chrysler save on that? I'm thinking about buying one of these 300C but after finding out that they don't have side airbags I'm not really sure what to buy... This is ridiculous. Why would Chrysler do that?! I just don't get it. Wouldn't it be better if these cars were fully equipped if it comes to safety?! ...

Would any car really do well in this kind of accident? Law of physics: your head is first going to hit the side of the interior of the car and then it is going to ricochet in the other direction. Don't see how any car could prevent this. The top (but not the sides) of the center console (armrest) of the 300 is padded. How come the car has no center console in this test? Plus, look how far forward the dummy's seat is in this test. If the seat were farther back, it would have been safer.

I'm an American and I can honestly say that the Americans can't make cars. American auto manufacturers are concerned about just a few things, like how to mass produce as many vehicles as possible with the smallest possible overhead to increase profit margins (which means poor quality and poor safety.) they want good PR regardless of the truth, and that's where most of their money goes. I learned quickly after our Dodge died. Now I drive BMW, and I have had no issues whatsoever.

But the U.S spec car had only 130bhp, the engine was French, it was built by people with very little training, the hinges on early cars couldn't hold the doors, the bodywork required lots of polishing and lots of early safety features promised such as airbags and an ERM underside were never fitted. Iconic yes, but it was never a match against its similarly priced competition such as the Merc Sl and the Porsche 911.

@cadrolls You've got to be kidding me. Here's a case study: Ford probably makes the safest cars out of the Big Three. However, this development didn't come along until they bought Volvo in the 90s and integrated all of their technology into products from other lines. Volvo, like all of the other truly safest cars on the road, is European. If we have anyone to thank for making cars safer it's the Swedes and the Germans.

thats not a clever example. if you drop one egg and 10 watermelon from tenth floor than calculate it by saying "look. only 1 egg was broken vs 10 watermelon were broken" its not a good comparison. you can compare 2 things only in same number and same condition. crash testes are for this. you can compare test results gathered from a single dummy crashed in a mercedes, then data from a dummy inside an 300. see which one had more severe damage.

If we want to go back to the begining of the first model year of the Camry and compare it to a new model of American car, we have that option too. We could also compare Camry of 1986 to a similar American car of the same year too. I'm sure you would already KNOW what the outcome would be though. They simply didn't engineer cars with as good of crumple zones back then, the technology wasn't there. As a result, the cabin crumpled as much as the nose of the car, instead of the nose absorbing most of the impact. And yeah, I work in crash testing so I've got a small clue of what I'm talking about at least. Search "Malibu Crash Test"
