Fantastic tool and History from Chris belcher original ideas. Thank you for sharing.Shame us locksporters can not obtain as GJ locks has strict but ''important'' guidelines!! great demonstration and an in depth description by your good self 👍👍👍🔑🥇🏆🔐🔒🔓🥃 almost like a lesson in been a locksmith.

I’m not sure it’s a shame the tool is restricted really as the market of locksporters who want to spend the best part of £250 for a pick for one rare-ish lock is going to be pretty small I’d imagine 🤷♂️

Chubb (when Chubb existed.) used to do a very nice front door lock with an Ava core, you can still pick them up NOS of Ebay. I like them because the keys are just so satisfying. I have a couple Chubb Ava padlocks, but not the Ava cored Hercules which is a beast. Also of note is that a long time ago Ford cars used Ava style locks.

Hi Lock Noob, The "bullet" lock you actually picked, we would see them from time to time on fire proof filing cabinets, as well as Chubb "book" safes. There was no special pick available back then, and I guess, as well, the cost would have been prohibitive, weighed against the few times we would be called upon to open them. We still had to "look" professional and often the keys were locked inside. Using a small drill you could bypass the wafers and drill a tiny access hole at the back of the lock, and using a sharp probe, you could work the plunger back and open the lock. If there were no keys the lock would be replaced, if the keys were retrieved, the customer was given the option of a new lock. Thanks for showing the tool, and well picked on a tricky lock. (:-) Regards, Brian.

Having watched this about 10 times I think I’m getting how it works but on tip choice if the correct tip is a 3-3 would you still get the 1 increment as both are at 3 hight ? I can understand if it was one of the others as it would give the extra 1 when the wafer is in the correct place (set ) but am assuming on a 3-3 it will set both ways ?

9 Wafer ones have 3 heights, 10 wafer ones 5 heights. 3 wafer is palindromic, then 2/4 wafer, and in the 10 wafer version 1/5 wafer. 9 Wafer versions reads 2,3,4. 10 Wafer versions 1,2,3,4,5. Cuts on either side add up to 6, 3 cut on on side therefore 3 cut on the other side. 2 cut then 4 cut other side, 1 cut then 5 cut the other side.

Couldn't you just tension from the rear with the correct tip (5 options to test) and then apply tension and use normal picking tool (e.g. basic hook) to test if each slider moves up or down? If it moves a lot, it's not a binding (yet); if it moves a bit, it's in the false gate; if it doesn't move at all, it's the binding slider and you have to move it to find a gate. Can you feel the difference between true gate and false gate on a single slider? Obviously there's only two options (one false gate per slider) so you can set a gate and look for next binder if nothing else works. I find it a bit surprising that the manufacturer didn't put a spinning disk with the centering indention in the rear of the lock. That would prevent any attack that tries to tension the lock by grabbing the rear of the lock, and the implementation cost would be close to cost of penny.
