I went to a Gong Show taping in 1978. They made 5 shows in a row (after 3 you had the option to leave, more people were waiting outside). I sat in the front row and Chuck walked over, I shook his hand, then found out he came to see his daughter who was sitting next to me. Also shook hands with Gene Gene. Anyway, I always thought Chuck got the idea for his shows from the first reality show I can remember - Candid Camera that first aired in 1948! It starred regular people, and, like Gong, they often looked like fools, but the participants wanted to be on it. Well done, Chuck!

Chuck Barris was my father's first cousin. He always had me call him "Uncle Chuck". When he became successful, he lost any time for his family, and I remember Chuck's mother half-joking to me that she had to go through three secretaries to make an appointment to get her son on the phone, and he had the secretary tell her "tell my mother I have 10 minutes for her on the phone, and not a minute more". My father used to take me Saturday mornings to Chuck's house on a cliff in Malibu, and he was very nice and welcoming, as he was usually just alone there.
