Chuck is right and I am so glad to see that he explains the difference between a back/spin sidekick and a back kick, but he demonstrated it in the way a Karate fighter would. He explained the technique well, and how to use it in the best scenario. A lot of guys use a spin sidekick instead, and it doesn't work out to well. Traditionally, kicking isn't actaully part of Karate, and when they took more kicking techniques in the 60's and 70's, the kicks ended up looking very rigid.

ioriyogami, I agree I used this technique many times in tourneys. i'd set it up with a fake front kick from the back leg then spin into the thrust kick. the fake front kick would let me cover ground when my opponent backed up and would give the kick lots of power.

I think a kick (in a real fight) only matters if it works, that's the whole point of a kick. Also, you should never judge a style of martial arts especially when you have never done it before as you woudn't know the theory behind the kick. "It is not the martial art, It is the martial artist".

This is really interesting, usually when I see back kicks demonstrated in TKD there's full extension, but he's doing it with a bent knee so it can hit at close range and I guess be faster? It still sounds pretty powerful.

Done properly your jaw is not even facing the opponent and you are leaning back. It is a short, straight blast like a horse kicking backward. I've seen a guy carried out on a stretcher after catching this kick in the throat, many peoples ribs broken, countless people dropped after taking it to the solar plexus knockouts to the jaw and even a guys femur snapped when 2 tried to throw the kick at the same time. This is possibly the strongest kick in existence. No joke.

@ShatterEffectt I like WWE and MMA-the girls in WWE are hotties and back in the old WWF days most of the wrestlers had legit skills-heck,Undertaker has BJJ skills, Kane and Bret Hart have Wrestling skills,Daniel Bryant trains at Extreme Couture. Heck,Brock Lesnar/Bobby Lashley and Sakuraba are a few who have come from Pro Wrestling. If nothing else, it maintains the wrestler's skills/improves their fitness. Plus it looks fun :D

@cleberinthearea i'm not sure if it was a spinning back kick or spinning hook kick but back in September, my instructor (aged 34) was fighting an 18 year old; he was kicking the 18 year old's ass and won round 1 and even gave him an 8 count. In round 2 however,he got nailed with a spinning kick and was given an 8 count. Shortly after, the 18 year old gave him another spinning kick and broke his rib-it tempts me to learn this kick! Plus it look cool

@itsallgood239 Well, your spot on thats exactly how it works actually. if he turns into it it's not your fault, just like if you do a spinning elbow and it catches the back of their head its not your fault cause you weren't aiming for it. Your apponent doesnt stand still like a bag so its expected that some strikes arnt going to land exactly where intended. Same as if you slam someone and mid slam they put there head in a position where its going to land first, thats not considered spiking

This move is not that risky if done properly. Putting your back to your opponent is rarely a good idea, so the one using the move must excercise good judgement. I like to through a left hook and spin into the kick with this move. Guy is expecting a high punch and eats a kick to the chest. Or I'll do a high knee and spin into the kick. If you do it quickly, like I said, it's very effective. Don't go it often, though. The other guy will eventually catch on. (As is the case with MMA.)
@ProphetofGod

I agree, He seems to half ass his spin, and kick with his knee half bent.. Where as if you spin, turn your head (which i didn't see him do) and fully extend your hips, legs through to your toes, you get more power, but he just looks like he turns around and does some kinda donkey kick : S If he's as good as people say he is, he should be able to get a simple spinning back kick right, and he's teaching those guys the wrong technique
@cueballB

@ itsallgood321. Right, you can't hit the back of the head. But you can still throw a hook or a cross to the side of the head though. Fact of the matter is that you wont do that because you're defending against the kick, or you won't have the range to cross the distance. Either way, you're better of defending or avoiding a kick like this, rather than an immediate counter

I completely agree! I know a guy who was British taekwondo champ for years in a row (can't think what weight) and I even witnessed him get beat up by some girl in the pub! First off he's a light heavyweight. Second, taekwondo has proved to be very ineffective in an MMA environment. AS 'cool' and graceful as taekwondo kicks can be, it's not the kind of thing you need in MMA. The ammount of times people slip and miss giving high kick. I don't care how fast you are with your feet, I'd put my house down that Chuck would beat you in the cage.

While you are right, as I was taught in TKD that it was a Back Kick aka Mule Kick, this is just a simple MMA/striking demo. During PPV's when people say SBK it doesn't matter if it's a spinning heel kick, cause most people don't train. It's about relating to people, not being a back kick Nazi.
