Norris had said on many an interview that Carradine had a working knowledge of martial arts offensive and defensive techniques but that their was one important thing missing...the ability you achieve through discipline training of controlling ones punches and kicks. Norris said Carradine, would hit him constantly without pulling his punches and kicks.... so much so, that Norris said he would never do another fight scene with Carradine again. And he never did.

It would‘ve been interesting if Chuck Norris made a special guest appearance on Kung Fu:The Legend Continues as Walker:Texas Ranger,the role he had on CBS for almost a decade. In an episode of the Kung Fu spinoff,it would have Walker coming to Kwai Chang Caine‘s adopted hometown to pick up a criminal to be returned to Texas for extradition & Walker meets Caine & his son,Peter,by chance while aprehending the bad guy & find out each other‘s mixed heritages & that they‘re both fully trained martial artists.

The same Bruce Lee also said "Why doesn't someone pull out a 45 and BANG....settle it." The Dragon wasn't stupid. Real combat is survival, pure and simple. Dropping the gun belt is cool movie honor stuff, but it doesn't happen if you are defending your life or the life of someone you love. The difference is between the ears, not in how much you work out, not in what holds your pants up. We Americans got caught up in the MA craze when Lee died and Kung Fu was on TV. MA IS A LIFESTYLE, not a movie. If you have no substance and technique you will loose. Same with the gun. It's not in the hood, it's in the good, or it won't all be good
@tikkidaddy631
9 жыл бұрын
Now, I DID NOT SAY there is no place for MA, rather entirely the opposite. Know when where how why to fight., strike, cripple, or kill. God Forbid. There are consequences to everything. Take RESPONSIBILITY for your actions. You won't be so quick to fight. Quick anger and rage cloud the mind. No one is or was unbeatable. But all things being equal, Lee wil always be considered the best, and all these others, as good as they were/are, are catchups...off the soapbox now...sorry guys

Carradine wrote there were 3 finalists for the Kung Fu role: Carradine, Bruce Lee and character actor William Smith. Both Lee and Smith were Black Belts, Carradine was a award winning Broadway Dance choreographer with no martial arts experience. He was used to copying dance moves, and had no problem copying martial arts moves in the series. Carradine stated he was a “quick study”, and often learned the moves, right before a scene was to be “shot”.

Let’s not split hairs here. We all know that Lee was equivalent to a karate black belt master. His basic style was Wing Chung. I understand that Kung Fu denotes rank with sashes. That being said he was a master in Wing Chung and founded his own style: Jeet Kun Do.

I hope I'm not viciously attacked here, but I'm going to make a comment concerning Mr Carradine's actual abilities as a martial artist. At the time he was making the first Kung Fu series, he was a novice. However, he went on to master Tai Chi. He was an instructor until his death. I've talked to many high level martial artist over the years, and in particular about this right scene. Now, Chuck was a bona fide master of Taekwando and Judo. (I myself have a belt in traditional Judo). I ask that you pay attention to how fluid Carradine's movements are. Yes, it is a coreographed fight, but Chuck's movements are so chambered and locked, that you can see it. (In a real fight he'd be much more fluid. Due to the nature of these stated fight scenes, he has to lockout so as not to actually strike David). Anyway, just an observation. Niether would have bested Lee in a real (street) fight. No contest. But David did eventually become a very good martial artist.
@Shanethefilmmaker

They picked Carradine for Kung Fu because he was a dancer. They figured if they could hire someone that could incorporate fighting skills with dancing they wouldn't have to hire Bruce Lee. At the time, Hollywood was and still is one of the most racist, sexist and homophobic establishments in the world. Even during the 2010s when they claim to be progressive they still are these and it tends to slip out. So the notion of someone who while Born in America, but their ethnicity is Chinese playing the lead role was considered disgusting to them. True Carradine may have learned Martial Arts after the show ran it's course. However he was specifically hired to help steal Lee's story.

Here we go again comparing apples to oranges and finding out which one tastes better. It’s like this, Bruce lee was the martial artist from the start but not so much the actor, yet David Carradine was the actor but not so much the martial artist. David was good actor that found martial arts and Bruce found acting. Does it really matter who found what first? In Kung Fu David pulled off the part and his technique was superb and very convincing. We must remind ppl here David was a black belt which he achieved when the kung Fu series wound up. A true fight can be over in a few seconds. As a martial artist myself and knowing the facts I can’t stand over choreographed fight scenes it’s so far removed from reality. I think David was aware of this and he never went to town with his fighting. For those that think David technique is poor just don’t know the realities of real fighting. David offered a lot to martial arts and he was a fine martial artist in the end RIP David!
