Absolutely great band. Saw them years and years ago in Salisbury Arts Centre. As for 'one hit wonders', technically they are i suppose however thank christ for that. I am glad they were never a massive band....it meant more tight knit gigs with an awesome atmosphere. They have plenty of great songs with one of my faves being dog.

I have to agree. They don't deserve the moniker 'One Hit Wonders'...they're an anarchist music collective more concerned with performing songs that have a message than staying on the charts and finding that follow up hit. They've scads of great songs. One hit wonders to me are like those showbiz hacks who struck it rich that same summer with hits like 'the Macarena'and 'Mambo Number 5'.

I was very much familiar with Chumba from college radio before their massive hit. It is interesting that this song made them familiar and destroyed their ethos at the same time. Musically, it's a great song. At the end, there are four distinct melodies going on, including Purcell's Trumpet Voluntary. which takes it over the top. It's too bad that this song became a favorite of hacks everywhere

It's easy to see all sort of viewervids for: *TUBTHUMPING / CHUMBAWAMBA* (Jude Abbott/Dunstan Bruce/Paul Greco/Anne Holden/Harry Hamer/Nigel Hunter/Lou Watts/Boff Whalley) Copyright control including railfan train video fails. For instance, Alan Dean Smith of Florida, USA, had a tripod fall shooting one of the Millenniumforce vids, which would be perfect for nothing but sky on the end of the "I - get - knock'd - DOWN!" bit.

. . . their time in the limelight was over, they didnt try to write another Tubthumper. They all agreed that it was an interesting experience but that they preferred real life and now are a really great folk band, with the same attitude they always had.

I’d record John peel programmes then re record the music I liked as many probably did , I think my only Chum song was the Fabulous Revolution or His Masters’ Voice , recorded in the mid 80s. Very direct snappy and angry song - couldn’t quite believe my ears 10 or more years after when not in touch with chart music or mainstream music affairs, a cheesy BBC Radio 1 daytime announcer says “ here’s this weeks’ number one - Chumbawamba - with Tubthumping...” I guess I never should have underestimated chart surprises since for example The Stranglers in 83 , having had little airplay for 3 years , found themselves near the top of the pile with their wonderful ode to Opium or Hash , Golden Brown ! Still makes me grin when BBC Local radio play “ There She Goes “ ( the La’s ) or Golden Brown etc. Anyway , The Time Has Come - To Make A Choice , STOP TAKING ORDERS FROM HIS MASTERS VOICE 🤣🏴❤️

"Tubthumping" was written about the band's drunken neighbor (they lived in a commune) and isn't some motivational sing-song that it was made out to be in the U.S. They're an anarcho-punk band, not a pop group. Un, Shhhh!, Never Mind The Ballots, and Anarchy are some of my favorite albums of theirs. It's a shame that they are so misunderstood.
@WhatsCookingTime

It might not have been meant as a motivational song but it actually has helped a lot of people to literally get up and try again so no matter what the original intent was it's been beneficial to so many here in the United States and I'm sure other places too

I dont think Chumba abandond thier anarchic roots. At all. I understand when they said that being signed to an indie labal at that time was useless. They were run the same money grabbing people as majors, but they just werent as good at their job. So signing to EMI (who by that time HAD cut ties with Thorn which was the main reason the lefties hated them back in the 80's) meant they could keep on making records AND have a chance at selling them, which is the point. And I think that when they...

....DID have a hit, they used the platform that that gave them really really well. They behaved badly at the Brits in a true anarchic way, they said on TV that if you wanted to shop lift their CD, then thats fine with them but suggested that you should do it from large chains like HMV rather than small indie record shops. They did business with GM Motors only to give the money to a company who was fighting against GM Motors. They refused business with some other mutli nationals and when . . .

These guys are incredible, This "HIT" is a mediocre piece against the rest of their collection, truly great stuff. The newest one has the best title, that explains the whole music industry, and why, a real, thinking, non toy band, will never make it, its not about talent, its how good a puppet are you?

I liked the song as a kid and I got the cassette of the album and after having it for a month there were 6 other songs I like better. I remember telling people but I was in like 3rd grade so nobody listened to me. Story of my life. I told everyone in 5th grade about incubus too and nobody listened untolil a few years later.

Exactly. They don't deserve to be put in the same category as the people who wrote songs like "Mickey" and "I'm Too Sexy". Besides, I don't get why they're considered a one-hit wonder in the US. I thought their song "Amnesia" got pretty good radio play in the US too. Maybe not. I know they had the song "Pass It Along" featured in a US car commercial.

Yeah well people are like that. I wouldn't worry about it, there are plenty of folks out there that unduly despise Chumbawumba- underground punkers and journalists alike. I wouldn't join the anti-chumba bandwagon simply because they said something to you one day and then changed their mind. Go easy.

@Cryptbass -I think what you said about the song bringing people together it is a GREAT point. I look at my favorite Dave Matthews Band (DMB) & think about what my Dave said in Rolling Stone "You don't have to agree w/any of us politically but if you love our music, you can be a DMB fan" I don't agree w/them politically but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE their music so I guess I am a DMB fan?
