Friar Juan San Miguel founded the parish of San Francis of Asisi in 1533 and with it, the city of Uruapan, Michoacán. The façade and the towers that we are now seeing are part of the original construction in stone, although it's interior has been renovated in the 20th century in the modernist style, and adorned with murals by the Iranian artist Mohammed Sciddel, who stayed to live the rest of his life in Uruapan, becoming a highly appreciated art teacher to his young students.
But the first building in Uruapan was a chapel built in the Huatapera, the site that is now occupied by the Temple of the Immaculate Conception.
It imitates the neoclassical style, and the façade and sculptures of the Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. Its reconstruction began in 1890, 357 years after the original building, that was already in ruins, and concluded in 1970.
Unfortunately, less than a week before I published this video, one of its statues was damaged by a lightning bolt losing its head, which was recovered in two fragments.
