Bought my first NB back in 2014. Bright green haha. Well I have gone thru about every grovely board made. From All of Lost’s newer shapes and the CI Pod Mod etc, and I ended up back on the NB2 and it’s my favorite board hands down. Also rode the nb3, but I still like NB2 best. I like the original nb better than the 3 honestly. Thanks for the great review man!!

i would encourage anyone buying the board manufactured at the Australian factory to order a custom with extra glass, the extra light glassing on the stock boards dings and pressure dents extremely easily, my board is covered after 2 months of use its pretty damn fragile, even dents from duckdiving....apart from that i love the board, cant believe how well it paddles!

Noel is a great surfer and he has valid insight on his boards. Everyone is different though and I just wanted to add my 2 cents here if anyone is looking at the NB2 for a potential new board. I'm 5'9 170 and am LOVING my 5'9 stock Spine Tek (31L). I wouldn't be worried about going too big on this board to be honest. If you're surfing quality waves you probably don't need the foam. If you're surfing your average SoCal beach break through the year, and don't mind the extra foam for paddling and getting on plane a little quicker. My thought is that it's better to have too much speed than too little. This board absolutely flies and if I need to burn speed, it isn't that much of an issue. It pivots nicely off the chop tail when you need it, but also the longer rail line (matching your height) makes it a great daily driver when the surf is waist to a bit over head. The board works great in knee high stuff, but feels the best between chest high to about 2ft overhead. I'm sure it would work great in bigger stuff but haven't had the opportunity. Riding in the AM2 Tech Flex Future fins. The NB2 has the straight outline and flat rocker which will feel very different than a conventional short board. You'll be trading some maneuverability for speed and flow , which should go without saying. Highly recommended board and would recommend it in your standard length without question.

Just got the NB2 in PU standard glass 5' 9" standard dims - wanted more durability and weight in choppy/textured conditions at my local break (El Porto). After a few sessions I can confirm that at 31 liters this board paddles and catches way easier than my last board at 34 liters (Tomo Evo) which is strange and cool. Those CI guys definitely know how to make a well balanced instrument. Thanks for all the great reviews! So hard to choose!

For the community: been riding the NB2 in spinetek as a DD and has taken my surfing to the next level. I've never landed an air but this board will make you try. I'm 6'4 and 190lbs and ride the 5'11 stock dims. Paddles better than my hpsb and spinetek is a lot more durable than PU. For Mr. Salas -- going to Nica soon and was wondering how'd you like the nb3? I have the Two Happy and wanted a second board in case it snaps, but the nb2 doesn't do so well in hollow Beach breaks or size. Was thinking the nb3 would be a good idea with the rounded tail to keep things calmer for bigger/hollower waves. Thanks! And feel free to ask questions anyone here about the NB2.

We evaluated square tails and found they pivot turn well. The reason for a square tail is to ride a shorter board with more parallel rail line. It rail turns like a longer board but pivots off the top. Everyone in my group preferred a swallow tail because the tail sinks more in a rail turn. The board you are reviewing was ridden by Corky Caroll at pipeline in the 1970's.

Your audience will be stoked for you to make a living doing what you do so well. The integrity of your reviews will not be tainted by the funding because the proof in your reviews is always in the pudding ( the video footage). Plus, the reason that you are such a great asset to surf companies and the public is that everyone knows that you tell it straight (and from knowledge/testing). Hi Noel, Just got my NB2 a couple weeks ago. Here it is my review (to all of you also), and notice I am just coming out from a Lost Psychokiller (PK), both with 29L, and 5.9. I do prefer Lost Carbon Wrap over the SpineTek, mostly because the Spinetek gets the board to stiff (at least for me), also I do believe Spinetek floats a bit more, PK paddles a bit better and its easier to catch waves (in my first 2 days it was quite difficult to catch waves on my new NB2...). Now, the NB2 is much more looser, I love it in the pocket (it is really fun the way the tail gets released), and goes over flatter sections much better (PK used to stop). Surprisingly, NB2 handles bigger waves better (I already surfed from 1 to 7 foot waves with it). Overall, NB2 is a great board, but would be even better in Carbon Wrap :)

Hey Noel, I know that this review is a year old, but as someone with lots of CI experience, I think your design idea of shortening the carbon strips in the tail will lead to a potential buckle point where the central strip and the rail/tail strips are supposed to overlap. I've seen spine-tek break just above the center strip (toward the nose) before and I would be worried that a back footed surfer would buckle it at the tail just above where you cut short the carbon strips. My working theory is that the spine tek transfer the stress along it's length and once beyond it's length that's a potential weak spot. It's a great construction, but I think that interplay on the tail keeps the board strong. Curious if you ever got Britt to make you one the way you proposed and what your experience was?

I'm calling this the POP without the Spring I took this board out on Monday, Memorial day where the waves were shoulder high on the bigger sets. One thing I like to do is take a board out on crappy days to see how well it performs under less than desirable conditions. I caught fun waves on this board but it was nothing of what I expected, let me explain, With a board being that wide I like to see that get up and go right out the gate and this board didn't have that for me. The board honestly felt clunky. When a good section did come through and I got a chance to experience it in the pocket, the board came alive at the top of the wave with good pop and can be thrown around pretty easy, however it lacked the spring that something like the cymatic or even the rocket wide had infused into it's design. If the wave didn't offer much punch then the board was slow edge to edge and tended to bog fairly easy. However, if the wave had some kick to it then you got to experience how fun it could be. Right now I'm surfing the Holy Grail by Hayden Shapes cause I took a trip up to Huntington, were the waves can very easily amplify so I wanted a board that can handle that so that's why I selected the Holy Grail. Sadly, I think I would have had more fun on the grail than on the NB2 Board Wars Holy Grail vs NB2 The Grail bends over and goes booboo on the NB2 thumbs down on the NB2 Pros: fun when the waves have punch and are clean Cons: in my experience: not an all rounder and most def not a quiver killer, missing that spring on the bottom turn(better on the backside), tail feels too stiff, too much carbon on the tail, lacks get up and go, does not help you catch waves early enough being that it's so wide, rails tend to bog easily if wave doesn't have much punch to it.

@dkilla01
5 жыл бұрын
@@goog646 Sure Glad you liked the report, Okay so here are the nuts and bolts of your question, The board can be a surfed on smaller days if you're mid intermediate over above because the board is whippy and can get into those small crevices of a wave really fast and it will allow you to get those quick turns in smaller waves. The paddling can go either way, In my opinion, I would rather grab another board on smaller days unless I was surfing somewhere punchy like snappers or Blacks. It's not the best paddler because of the pointy nose although there is ample foam upfront, again if you're already a good paddler then you should be fine but a lot of times I find myself riding the wide point because everywhere else is thin and I have heard this from other surfers as well, meaning riding the board more up towards the front on smaller flatter days, hope this helps M.

I think allot of boards would work well at 2-4 foot lowers but put the same board on a fatter face or hollower wave elsewhere and it would be a different story. Heya Noel, just wondering what fin you would now call for the NB2, a raked fin like the MF fin to tame the square tail during turns or a real upright fin to counter the boards propensity to surf horizontal? My guess is a construction with a little less flex would hold better and perhaps not an AM2 type fin where the back fin is smaller (so it doesn't slide too much). Some friends and me are keen to hear your thoughts on this, particularly: upright vs raked for the NB2, and having the same size back fin (not a smaller one) so it holds. Cheers!!!

Hi Noel, Excellent review! In a review of the Rocket wide you Declaration that it is the best surfboard in 1-3 waves. beyond the fact that the neck bird fits higher waves, what is more suitable for 1-3 fit waves? and why? (both in spine tek).
@surfnshowreviews7777
5 жыл бұрын
Amir Shahar Not sure the RW is more suitable for 1-3’ waves now after riding the NB2. I will say that the RW can do tighter turns in a small wave. The NB2 gets vertical faster due to pivot off the square tail. If I had to choose between the two I would go NB2 so if it gets bigger than 3’ the NB2 excels there compared to the RW.

For the spine-tek EPS construction with this board, would you recommend CI's stock ultra light glassing layup (4oz/4oz & 4oz) or their standard stronger one (6oz/4oz & 4oz)? Do you think that little extra weight added from the thicker standard glassing could be beneficial to the spine-tek board for the 2 ft - 6 ft wave range? Thx
@surfnshowreviews7777

Mitchell Wilkinson A little more weight will be a little better in bigger surf. It will also take less pressure dents and last a little longer. In 1-2’ surf you might feel the weight a little and have a little less pop though.

Hi, Noel great video as usual. I was looking at the CI website and I don't think you mention it in your video but the options are of some considerable extra costs, spine tek +$130. Flex bar +$190 . krusher74 Yes I have used the Varial foam and it’s pretty sick but not worth the extra cash from my perspective. It doesn’t hold up much better compared to EPS or PU. Hey Noel. Nice review. You can really see the difference between the honeycomb AM1 and tech flex AM1 in the spine-tek. I'm riding a bunny chow right now with the Dane large captain fins and love it, but at times it feels a bit too loose for me. I was wondering if riding the AM2s would tighten it up due to the increased sweep in the template. Have you tried the tech flex AM2? Wondering if they would give me more hold and allow me to push harder in my turns without sliding the tail.

@taradead

Matte is faster, and significantly lighter, than gloss. Notice how snowboards and skiis have a grooved base...this is to minimize the suction water (melted ice crystals) creates when sticking to it. The warmer the snow, the coarser the base grind. A perfectly smooth base simply would not slide.
