If you want it to play in tune. The bridge needs to be the same distance from the 12th fret as the 12th fret to the nut.

Thanks, I'm a newbie, just finished #7. I haven't seen anyone put a number on the break angle at the bridge. I put the cigar box guitar together before doing the frets. Then I put a US dime at fret 1 and a stacked US dime and quarter at the 12th fret. Then I lay a straight edge across them going back to where the bridge will be. This gives me a pretty good idea of how tall the bridge/saddle needs to be. If the strings move when playing I notch the saddle. Your info will really help planning the tailstock and where to terminate the string ends. A dime is about. 050 inch, a quarter is about .070 in. My bridges are about .50 in. This is with 1 degree of back angle on the neck and a fret board that is .25 above the lid. I also like your idea of having trial bridges of various heights. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the cigar box guitar community.

We sell a graduated set of bridges for set-up fitting, as this saves a lot of trial and error. www.chickenbonejohn.com/collections/bridges/products/bridge-fretwire-bridge?variant=13429063778348

Putting a back angle on the neck isn't necessary -it's an option but it's a lot easier to put the neck in Fender-style, parallel with the tip of the guitar. Check our video on the subject. kzitem.info/news/bejne/o5hov6J4qIyLd34

Very helpful. More neck angle gives you the choice of more break angle. Something to consider if you want to make a resonator, which limits your choices on bridge placement.

I was thought the bridge is double the twelfth fret.

Yes, once you have determined the bridge position for that particular box you can set out the scale length from there and determine where the nut should be. This is about positioning the bridge in respect of the string anchor position to ensure a good break angle and best acoustic performance, which needs to be decided before the rest of the setting out of the guitar.
