Dang! I think those CBF's are just too cool! Thanks for my next project idea.

Beaut! Just wondering - how do you involve CAD in the process? I know woodworking, and I know CAD, so it’s always cool to find an unexpected intersection.

Thanks. I've made much better ones now :) For CAD, we use Autodesk Inventor and do modal analysis. So, students build the model, assign the closest wood from the library that they can (maple), and simulate the vibrational modes. They do this without sound holes first, to get an idea of their role in changing the sound. Then I encourage them to try different sound hole designs and see what it does to the spectrum. Classic f-holes often end up being the best choice. The big surprise is that the sound holes don't merely "get the sound out" - they really shape it, by adding lots of new modes. The way I explain it is that the box is the "speaker" for the strings, and the bridge is the transducer, so the box needs to have lots of modes to convey the sound. Students are often surprised to discover that the sound holes can deepen the sound. The CAD simulations also give the more theoretically-inclined students an important role.

Yes violin necks are difficult to build yourself "very difficult" even for a good cbg type craftsman/builder ,but the best cigar box violin builds w cutaway wastes/sides I have seen that weren't built by a trained professional luthier ,but take a look at the KZitem Channel "Morbanjo" they look and sound great! I like this Lil mini you have hear aswell nice work.

That coffin fiddle has a scale shorter than the pochette (violino piccolo) that dancing masters used in the 18th C. thus will be very hard to play.

Hi Kieth, cool video. Did you see violins and violas I made for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra? Project is on KZitem called "A requiem for meters". Based on my Cigar Box design but made from electricity meters.

The strings are too high off the fingerboard.

Yeah, well, this vid just shows some first attempts. We've gotten much better at it.
