Hey everyone and welcome to another railfan trip.
Today, we're stopping in Sharonville at the Norfolk Southern Yard north of Cincinnati.
We'll get an aerial view of the yard and learn a little of its history, but first we'll start off at the busiest rail spot in the tri-state, Winton Place.
Just an FYI, the video is in the reverse of how my day was.
Winton Place is a favorite for just about any railfan.
You get plenty of action and you see CSX, Norfolk Southern, plus others.
There's also the B & O color position light signals.
I've never had any trouble with any of the workers in the area, only the occasional question about why I'm filming the trains.
It is a little bumpy for a car, so, take your time if it's your first visit.
Now, to Sharonville Yard.
This was a former New York Central hump yard before being turned to flat-track switching.
The year was 1964 and Sharonville Yard was going through a major modernization project.
This yard was the New York Central's 'bustling Gateway to the South.'
It was in the midst of a $1.2 million overhaul.
The 55-acre facility is about 16 miles north of downtown Cincinnati.
It was built in 1908 for flat switching and converted to hump operations two decades later.
Sharonville Yard is described as the key NYC interchange with six major rail carriers serving the south and east.
It would handle coal, whisky, tobacco and thousands of new automobiles from Michigan plants heading toward southern dealerships.
It connected with the Southern, Louisville & Nashville, Chesapeake & Ohio, Norfolk & Western, Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio.
This will be the yard of the future when the renovations are finished the article says.
We can see most of the old structures have been torn down.
The roundtable is still there but the engine house is gone.
We also get another look at the intermodal facility.
I will say, I was surprised how busy the yard looks like it is.
I was expecting a much more vacant space.
I don't know where we'll head next or when, but I hope you'll tune in.
Until then, have a great day.
here are some interesting tidbits regarding today's trip.
