OSMO - the Ultimate Mobile Video making/creator tool.
Today we discuss WHAT IS, and HOW to USE the DJI OSMO (Mobile 4 / OM4, Mobile / OM3) as a follow-up to my Ultimate Osmo Mobile Walkthrough / Tutorial Guide and answer MOST COMMON QUESTIONS about the OSMO Mobile.
The new DJI Osmo Mobile 4 paired with the mobile video editing apps has made being a mobile phone video maker SO EASY. I did not own the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 2 or 1, so the DJI Osmo Mobile 4 has been my introduction into the world of being an iPhone Video Maker content creator. I’ve been using the DJI Osmo Mobile 4 for 8 months, and it has changed EVERYTHING!

LET’S DO ANOTHER DJI OSMO TUTORIAL. I’m talking about HOW TO USE THE OM4 aka Osmo Mobile 4, the Osmo Mobile 3, the Osmo Mobile 2 and the OG Osmo Mobile. If you noticed that I said MOBILE every time thats because my videos come from my iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 11 Pro. There is also the DJI Osmo Action, the DJI Osmo Pocket 2 and 1, and of course the OG DJI Osmo - but these are totally different products! Now that I think of it, That is a LOT of things to branch out to in 5 years.
Do you REALLY need a Phone gimbal?
If you are looking to efficiently + effectively create content in a way that is not overwhelming but still insanely high quality - you might need the Osmo Mobile 4 ! Handheld footage BEGONE!
Now, this video isn’t an OM4 Review, I’ve already made that video (Osmo Mobile 4 Walkthrough) - so today I’m going to show you how I ACTUALLY use my DJI Osmo Mobile 4 which is mainly for shooting my Instagram REELS.
Let’s clear this up reel quick, Instagram REEL quick ;) This video is not about making REELs necessarily, but acquiring great shots. Today, we will take what we have learned in other videos and apply it while learning new filmmaker techniques for using a gimbal. And Honestly, I guess this also applies whether it’s a DSLR Camera Stabilizer like the Ronin S2, or a Mobile Gimbal...or even if you’re not using a gimbal - Anyway! And because I got a lot of amazing questions in the comments from the first video - I will answer all of those at the end of this video!
SETUP
Balance → On → App → Horizon → Calibrate
Balance your phone first, remember, no phone case, magnet and camera icon facing UP
Next, turn on the OM4 and CONNECT TO THE APP
SUPER IMPORTANT for accurate stabilization and for using the key features like the buttons
Settings I use
I use the basic follow method
Remember my goal: to get SMOOTH 1 TAKE CINEMATIC CLIPS
FRAME
Pull up to the location
Find your favorite angle, something PHOTO worthy
Really important for all framing anyone
Even if someone isn’t in the frame, I try to make sure the BACKGROUND/WHOLE IMAGE is awesome, to begin with
Bring your camera and or your model to the final position and see what that looks like
Now let’s take a few steps back, or if you’re shooting something in the distance or with a lot of action you don’t have to move THAT much
FOLLOWING/TRACKING
If you’re using the MIMO App, you can use the Active-Track - if you’re using the moment app, you’ll have to follow manually which I tend to enjoy more, and is important to learn if you’re not always going to have a Model
My tip for following is to find a set distance that you want to stay apart, so you can predict the sizing and framing.
If you’re doing some sort of action, I would try to plan it out and run the shot a few times to really figure out where all of the motions are
BODY MOTION
Keep your movements slow. The Osmo Mobile Accelerates really fast so make sure that you’re not too quick or move too much
Lock your arm or body position for a smoother shot, + use your body instead of your feet
Incase you stumble or get bumped, your arm doesn't move too much.
