Why are these so short? I know folks were asked way more questions, so why can't we have the full length roundtable?

If writers get a full hr roundtable, DPs should too. It's so fascinating to listen to them and honestly, they have such down-to-earth egos, it's like listening to people talk casually at a get-together. No tension, just respect.

Rachel work on mudbound was hauntingly good. It was a a grimy beautiful movie to watch.

mike lyles I couldn’t get past it being shot digitally. She said they tested super 16 but that was it too soft. 35mm she found was too pristine (???) and there wasn’t enough of a difference with the Alexa footage with added grain. And they needed the extra days that digital could afford apparently. It was just too clean and the film really need grit and dirt and grain. The problem is that, watching it on Netflix even at the highest quality, the grain is just nowhere to be seen with the compression there. Would need to see it on BR I’m guessing to get the full texture but it’s just jarring. Rachel said in retrospect she wished she had shot Mudbound on 16mm for day scenes and Alexa at night, would have been the best choice

The previous roundtable was significantly better. In terms of dialogue flow, cinematography and color correction. But again, no one knows what production went through, cut in budget, time limitation and such. Appreciate for the content but hoping for a better version.

Rachel Morrison is a good cinematographer but visually Black Panther is quite an ugly film I mean the color grading is so flat and muddy. A problem that plagues most of the marvel movies.

I've seen it multiple times and the only scenes that stand out visually are the ancestral plane scenes. All the day time scenes look flat and dull with no deep blacks or rich color. My issue is more with the color grading than the cinematography but id say that the fight scenes aren't very well filmed either. @@ابنعبدالرحيم

I'm not sure what medium you watched the film on, but I would completely disagree. The spaces outside Wakanda were intentionally filmed to look flatter to contrast Wakanda's lush vistas. Even in this video, the examples they give of Morrison's work on the film show rich colors and deep blacks. When it comes to fight scenes, however, the focus was more directed towards emotions and character development rather than spectacle. @@domo641 I don't know where you've seen the film because Ryan and Rachel SPECIFICALLY wanted to steer clear of the usual bland, yucky Marvel assembly look (Rachel talked about it as well) and have a strong contrasty image. I don't care much for digital overall (I love film) but Black Panther is really a standout visually among all MCU films, it looks vibrant, contrasty. So yeah, must be your display or you saw the film in a theater with bad projection or the lamp was on eco mode.

That's an unfair thing to say. Yes, his cinematography is incredibly striking, but Laxton's photography is really strong too, regardless of what you think about Moonlight, you can't deny that it's cinematography was one of it's strong points. Also, Rachel Morrison is much better than her work on Black Panther would suggest. I agree that it looks run of the mill, but her strength lies in lighting and photographing smaller more intimate films, and her 16mm work on Fruitvale Station shows that.
@shipaudas

@@bluefilmsltd thanks for your comment, I'm just comparing this three projects, honestly I think Zal's work on Cold War is outstanding and with no doubt think that this is a pretty unfair competition, the other two movies look like the cinematography was just to fulfill the movie, I have nothing personal against any of them, just talking about their work
