From cooked & canned apples, this focuses on getting the topping together --
IMPORTANT ! Always use glass, Pyrex, or ceramic bakeware for fruit crisps & cobblers, etc. Almost all fruits have some acidic component, and direct contact with metal bakeware can sometimes bring a Galvanic effect & strip ions out of the metal -- leads to a weird, "tinny" taste. Non-stick LINED metal bakeware might be OK -- but just stick w/ glass & have no worries !
Variant Recipe (obviously) -- take it where you want. As in Video, chopped Walnuts, Pecans, or maybe Cashews are good in this, and Sunflower or sesame seeds would be, too . . .
If you go nuts & seeds 4 protein, + milk over (brkfst style) -- there's dairy protein, calcium & Vitamin D. Oats are complex cereal grain carbs (long slo burn) + Brown sugar (quick carbs = quick energy) & Apples are pretty good balanced carbs / fructose. Pretty healthy start to a day, esp. if toss in small handful of raisins as ya heat it in microwave.
On nutrition & health, between Apples & Oats, here's a LOT of fiber -- I have to take it easy on this stuff. It's Rocket fuel, for an old man's digestion (wait . . . Am I over-sharing ??)
Amounts below are approximations -- if you doubt you'll have enough topping, heap up / bump up the measures a bit. Better the crisp top is too thick, than not covering apples well.
My advice is bake a smaller crisp, more often -- this is best if it's used up in about 2 days. Invite friends, or plate a couple scoops & take to the neighbors !
For 6" x 8" up to 8" x 8" pan (heap measures a bit for this) --
1 cup Quick Cook Oatmeal (NOT instant packets & NOT Old-Fashioned)
1/3 cup Brown sugar (Dark Brown or Golden Brown = BETTER !)
1/4 cup A.P. Flour
Pinch of salt (1/4 tsp or LESS)
1/2 or 3/4 tsp your spices (to taste -- Cinnamon OR Allspice, & either
can pair w/ Nutmeg, Ground Ginger, a little ground Cloves, etc.)
MELT 5 -1/2 TBSP Margarine or Butter & Margarine (about a third butter
to 2 parts Margarine)
For 9" x 9" pan (as in Video . . .)
1 -1/4 cup Quick Cook Oatmeal
1/2 cup Brown sugar
1/3 cup A.P. Flour
Pinch of salt (1/4 tsp)
3/4 or 1+ tsp your spices (to taste)
MELT 6 TBSP (plus a pat maybe) Margarine or Butter & Margarine
For 9" x 12" or 10" x 13" pan (approximately)
1 -2/3 or 1 -3/4 cup Quick Cook Oatmeal
2/3 or 3/4 cup Brown sugar
1/2 or 2/3 cup A.P. Flour
Pinch of salt (1/4 tsp or bit more)
1 -1/2 (or more) tsp your spices (blend, to taste . . .)
MELT 7 -1/2 TBSP Margarine or Butter & Margarine
