Circadian rhythms are daily cycles of physiology and behaviour, with the cycle of sleep and wakefulness being the most obvious circadian rhythm in humans. They are expressed at all levels of life, from prokaryotic blue-green algae to higher plants and animals. Their biological role is to anticipate and thereby allow organisms to adapt to the solar day and night.
Disruption of our circadian programme through shift work, old age, and neurological disease is a significant and growing cause of chronic illness.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Its scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
