I actually built an 8x8 LED matrix in a very similar way to how he made the 3x3 matrix. I didn't use any board for it, though perfboard would have been nice to help hold the leds in a clean grid and make the display more rigid, sadly though I did not have any on hand. To avoid burning my fingers every time I soldered an led, and to make holding the LEDs in place while I soldered easier, I used play-dough that I flattened out and pushed the LEDs into it to hold them in line. If you decide to do this I definitely recommend using something like play-dough to hold them in place.

I UNDERSTOOD! I only have to use 3 NPN transistors to power the anodes and power the cathodes directly with the microcontroller. So I use 6 pins of the microcontroller, and use a minimum delay, so, when I flash a LED, and want to flash the another LED togheter, I turn it off it quickly and turns on the other, delay a milisecond and turn it off and turn the other on so fast that nobody will see then turning off!! :D (sorry by my VERY poor english)

Would you have any tips on how to make LEDs useful to motorcyclists? I have this idea to have a red flat strip or led strip across the back of my glove for signaling or just across my shoulders on a jacket for extra visibility but have no idea how to create something like that. It all needs to be condensed enough to not interfere with driving. Love your work though Collin.

@eightstudio he has another video on it. basically its like developing film or silk screening. The have a transparency with the design of the board on it and a board coated with resist. this is then exposed to light after being cured with the paper on top. the portions with the transparency on in will have the resist under it but the portion exposed to light will allow the resist to dissolve. It is then cure again. Watch the video for more detail

How about rigging it to an array of distance sensors to make a low resolution depth camera? Is the Arduino fast enough to generate a scrolling spectrogram at that resolution in real time? (if it's not obvious yet, i barely know these things; my knowledge about each item could probably fit on a hovertip)

Soo if I want to drive an RGB LED matrix, how should I do it? Can I consider it as three separate 1-color matrices and use the MAX721 chip to drive each of them? Or are there some better ways to do it?
@edwardholmes91
7 жыл бұрын
Sci Twi Three separate drivers would work. By using PWM and creating 0 - 255 intensity levels as well for the RGB channels, you have yourself a 16.4m colour 8 x 8 pixel display :)

Collin says that the the process of multiplexing is- lighting few LEDs fast. Actually it is called persistence of vision.Multiplexing is wiring method used here! correct me if I am wrong.
@TortureBot
6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like phosphor persistence, like a CRT, where the excited phosphor glows long enough for the electron beam to make it's rounds before hitting a particular area again. What confuses me, is in the video he is talking about multiplexing being a way to get around multiple LEDs lighting when all you are attempting to do is light a certain one, but then explains how this multiplexing will light them up so fast that they ALL appear to be lit at once. Is that not making the initial problem worse? - "Well, this one here lights up along with this one, but... if I do THIS they ALL appear to light up at the same time! Problem solved!" ??????????
