It is in the Beiras region that the birthplace from which many of the Cistercian Order's monasteries emerged. They sought isolation and distance from the hustle and bustle of the villages. The security provided by the proximity of Britiande, land belonging to Egas Moniz, prince of Columbus and lieutenant of Coimbra, Viseu, Lamego, Seia and Feira and tutor of D.Afonso Henriques, was the main thread of these various Cistercian foundations close to the Douro Valley. Salzedas originated in Abadia Velha, where D.Teresa Afonso, heir to Egas Moniz, donates land to the Cistercian Order for the monks of Clairvaux to come, to start this reformulation of the old Order of S.Bento. The engineering for the location and implementation of these monasteries, and all the infrastructure created by them (Farms, agricultural holdings, surplus sales outlets, development of vineyards and orchards, networks of roads and crossing bridges, use of Conversos, hydraulics etc etc) leaves anyone in awe.
