The game runs like shit but if you can't get 30 FPS on "a powerful system" like he's saying you either don't know what you're doing or your system really isn't powerful. Now getting 40-50 FPS is a different story and to asctually get 30 FPS with decent settings you NEED a powerful computer but what he's saying isn't accurate. Runs just as terrible as the first game.
@matsv201

@@designedsilence117 Well its a city builder, not a twitch shooter. They typically don´t run at 60fps.. or really even 30. Its also a huge diffrance if you run it in 4k or 2k. I´m not saying the game lacks optimization issues... it sure have, but people really take it out of context. Also.. like lowering, but... mostly changing the settings does improve it a lot. I seen people running the game at 1080p at 35+fps on a 2060 while recording. One huge issue is that they developers have prioritized creative vision above performance. For example removing motion blur, that really should not be on a city builder to begin with, gives a low end gamer about 2 extra frames. And it have literally no drawback. Motion blure is still on at very low setting in the standard. For fog, same thing, remove fog, and you get like 2 more frames. While that does impact the visuals, still my guess, if you run on low or very low, you don´t care that much anyway. Changing LOD to medium and to low gives 2-3 frames each. Setting shadows to low make them twich a lot, but removing them totally not only remove the twiching but also improves performance. It all piles up. That is all stuff the developed choices to not bring into the main settings. For something running a 2060 that can be the diffrance from ruining at 10fps and 20fps, from being close to unplayable. Yes the game will not look the same, but it still looks quite good.

I work in tech as well, and can confidently say that if project managers and everyone involved actually did their job properly, this trend would go away. It’s really only in certain industries such as gaming where this is a big issue, and that’s because we keep letting them get away with it. In my experience, if a product isn’t going to be ready by launch, we have the launch delayed until we are confident in the results. The big bad publisher narrative is just not helpful and misses how the industry works. Paradox support games and developers for the long term with continuous free updates produced alongside DLC. The reality is that most of the issues are developers having too broad a scope for their games for the same money as games cost 20 years ago and massively underestimating the time required for development. The entire deal for developers from publishers is that development studios scope and pitch a game and publishers give them the money to develop that in a particular period and organise press and marketing around that release date. This is on the development studio not the publisher.

As mixed as my impression was with my full breakdown of the per-release trailer, I do think it's important to realize that 1) it's not *broken* and IS very playable, which is critical to understand in the context that in C:S 1, the majority of players played vanilla, and 2) SOME of things we think don't look good or should be fixed, make it look unfinished, etc., are actually just our own preferences or opinions and we don't really know what they planned and what their scope was. On Point 1, current C:S 2 can't possibly perform too well with mods, but it will take time for mods to come along, so again for most people, who might always play vanilla (though to be fair, Paradox claims this effort mods to more players), it's fine and the game will be more optimized by the time we have to worry about performance with mods - especially if you're not picky about FPS and I definitely never have been. IDK what FPS I'm getting in C:S 2 - yeah it's not smooth, luckily barely any stutters, but it's a builder. I don't need it smooth unless I want to stream or record and that's not for most people. On point 2, the graphics are NOT up to par for 2023, but C:S 1 released with a cartoonish, tilt-shift, and semi-futuristic style. And after all the performance memes of C:S 1, maybe they just didn't prioritize graphics - luckily they mitigated that a bit with the screenshot function. But slightly technical things like wonky-ness on slopes or visual things like cranes building EVERYTHING including houses... rushed, probably, but it's nowhere near unplayable, and it's definitely enjoyable. You can have multi-level roads now, people! lol I'm on an i7-6700k and Vega 56 8Gb. It loads just as fast if not faster than C:S 1, city load time is equal, no bugs, no crashes yet, but ofc that's just me. What we should really watch out for is issues in key game functionality. Somone has claimed that true resource simulation actually isn't in the game. There's a bug of losing money and still being profitable. Is the former true? How bad are the reported bugs? How easily are they fixable? Are there any more nefarious or lied-about functionality? We should keep an eye and definitely hold CO and Paradox accountable for those.

The game is on Game Pass (console and PC). My guess is that early access wasn’t possible because of the Game Pass contract. They delayed the console versions until spring 2024. Most likely they struggled getting core systems working properly and didn’t have time for the optimization pass. There may have been some contractual issues on the PC side that compelled them to honor the release date. This is all speculation but the console delay is probably when optimization happens. Yeah, I'm running a "gaming" laptop of all things with low settings and 1080p and it runs pretty smoothly. Simulation games like City Skylines 2 take up a massive amount of CPU and memory, so I totally understand why this game can be pretty slow at 4k/high settings. People are getting way too picky about games that aren't "finished," especially in this day and age where games are getting more and more complex. Sure they can extend the release date of the game, but they need to make money at some point.

Yea... People are just getting spoiled with 4k, 500 hz screens (I know this is not a think), etc. If you can play the game on the lowest setting and it does what it's supposed to do then you are good. Having the higher settings is like complaining you don't have AC in a first world country. To me it looks fine in the videos I've watched including his. Yes there are a few glitches that can be ironed out, but the game is there. Performance wise I think it's hard to optimize for PC because there are so many different hardware configurations. Once they see what the broader gamers are complaining about they can fix it with patches.

PS I feel like more than any other industry, gaming gets away with releasing unfinished products the most. I really feel for the devs who’ve put their time and energy, often their hearts into a game only to be told by their bosses that they’ll release it as it is. If I handed in a draft for a research report to my superiors and they’d release it as is, with all my weird notes and often unfinished sentences because it’s more of a brain dump than anything, I’d be furious. It must be incredibly disheartening.

I think there was a point when this game was finished. I believe there was a change made just before beta testing to the way the game functions and the overall generation of the citizens that ultimately caused what are now catastrophic hardware issues. There was apparently a gag order within the NDAs to the content creators with regards to the ability to talk at all about the way the game performed technically. Truly a sad time to be a gamer as companies both AAA and not are able to release games in these states and we as consumers are told to just wait and see.

Love this vid...very well done. Also, don't knock yourself, you CAN talk to the problems of games being released unfinished without having been a dev. I see you say this a lot and seriously, you do not need to. I worked as a Games Tester for 6.5 years on multiple titles (XBox, PC, FPS, Sports, Racing, Strategy, Action Role-Playing, etc.) and I can say that ANYONE who plays a TON of games, you DO know when a game is ready for release and when a game is FUN, even as a layman. Even with my experience with testing Localizations, Animations, Level Design, Multiplayer, there were multiple instances where we as testers, would talk with the programmers, the world designers, animators, sound designers, etc and BEG to have them change something or even get rid of something that made no sense. We also would BEG for them to put something in, and usually get refused. The main thing I can say about working with Game Devs...is that a TON of Devs are NOT Game Players. Can they program their part of a game? Yes! Do they know how to make a FUN Game? Sometimes the answer is NO! Main reason is this...they are so busy programming their parts of a game, and often times working 12 hr shifts, that they do NOT always have time to PLAY the game they are making. I honestly believe that if you team does NOT consist of hardcore GAME PLAYERS, then more often than not, your game MAY NOT be a hit.

All of my old RTS studios have been run out of town by big corps like EA, so to see an effort layed out by Colossal Order to come out with Cities 2 is a relief that I will have something to play for the next 3-4 years as content is released. Take a deep breath and stand back for a little bit before we all throw this game out the window, or else we will have another dead franchise. Thank you for delving into this topic with some objectivity. IMHO: It seems as if players are simply feeling "taken advantage of", or being used to serve other purposes. What I mean by this is that, when we spend our (hard earned) money, we don't want to feel that we are wasting money OR being used to profit another. The "Ponzi" is as close to the emotion as I can get. Which can be perfectly legitamate AS long as we KNOW that this is the plan (ie Pre-release, Alpha/Beta Test, Early Access). Clearly defining a product as a RELEASE no longer holds any value. When the buyer no longer sees the value, or begins to assume that this is a lie, then "New Releases" will loose their value to the customer. While I guess this is NOT rocket science, I feel that being "taken advantage of" is becoming a legitamate business practice, and it's not going away unless we are ALL aware that it is. Remember dollars have no heart, so they do NOT feel what you and I do. If you want to explain how these emotions work on the consumer, you'll have to use a different language. Appeciated & thanks again, ~v~

This is no different from any other game release. I have heard people complain about most new releases or releases of updated games. All of them have issues. I have played a few hours on this game and found only one issue which may be my computer. Screen goes black except for streets names. Maybe its how I have the settings. One review I saw says change most settings to medium, you don't need them all at high. Give it a month or two to work out the bugs. No big deal. Thanks for doing this.

if you download the texture streaming and take the devs optimization suggestions you can get the game to 60 fps 1440p. Still doesn't make it okay to release in this kind of state but it is definitely more playable than many are making it out to be. Everyone always seems to jump on a newly released game and overexaggerate issues.

Here's my take: 1. From what I gathered from the developer's AMA, it seems like Paradox probably did tell them to release the game before christmas, and mapped out a very nice hype/marketing plan for them which they agreed to. 2. However, the developers themselves overestimated their own capabilities, but also decided that releasing the game uncooked was appropriate. Like everything they said made it sound to me like "Yah, we know that this game needs a lot of work, but we're going to continue to keep doing all that work, so it's ok for now and you guys can just play whatever we have been able to release as per our agreed release schedule 3. Now this gets *very* interesting when you throw in the culture of releasing incomplete games as a whole. This has happened so much now that it's absolutely normalized by the industry and accepted by the community. No Man's Sky is now considered a "good story" of a comeback. Cyberpunk 2077 now has "Very Positive" reviews. Elder Scrolls Online recovered. FFXIV recovered. However, there are more games that actually don't recover than there are games that do, but the devs gambled on how much goodwill they earned from Skylines I to release a broken game. And honestly, outside of the newcomers to the series and genre I'm actually seeing far more people defend Colossal than people who are upset. Most of Skylines player base is perfectly fine with this, and are ok with waiting for 6 months to a year believing that the game will be good.

TL;DR: I bought in knowing that there were issues. I wanted to be able to point out anything I found and report that back to Paradox and the dev team. Long Version: I've been watching Biffa Plays Indi Games (shorthand: Biffa) and City Planner Plays (or CPP), along with other let's Play and city builders out there for City: Skylines content for a while, then I heard about C:S2 coming out in the future through them and well.. REALLY ramped up my watching of Biffa and CPP's content (along with others I found through them like Toady ;) ). Well with all of this was the excitement. Then the release trailer happened with the UE5 visuals and everyone started to speculate... but then it came out they were hiring for Unity still so we knew then it wasn't to happen like that. But, then we got real in game footage and lost our minds collectively. Once we were back down to earth, we saw the bugs, the glitches, and that this was very much early access beta build indeed as they are fond of telling us. As the game went along it did seem to improve, their FPS started to get better... but then they also started to update their systems. That got worrying, but then the bomb exploded and we saw that the specs had been quietly updated to be even higher end... and I thought I'd be doing GREAT with my 2080ti and an i9 9900K at 5Ghz all core, 16GB DDR4, and a Samsung M.2... yea some of that is still ok, but mid tier instead of recommended tier... The new requirements scared me and others if we are all being real. But then it happened, I thought to myself... OK, I know if I buy now, I can at least know that I'm buying for mid-tier performance. There will likely be a Day 1 patch and optimizations. I'm buying knowing that. However then we get the news that they didn't hit their performance targets on time. So basically if I buy now I'm buying, essentially, full retail into an early release that isn't being marketed as such. But at least they told us so right, just not in such words. Well, I thought about it... and decided yea, it's worth it. I can still see if I find anything that needs to be reported and can help out like that. Then the morning arrives when they release it. I Preload because I went against my own usual comments of DON'T PRE ORDER.... but I KNEW this was going to be early access basically speak ahead of time, and so that's a little easier to buy in. Plus if others were running it if with a few hitches here and there I would probably be fine. Then it finally happens, the play button on Steam goes blue! I hit play and load up. It's the fastest a Cities game has ever loaded for me. I get in and change a few settings that people were already talking about immediately and then get stuck into a map. And wouldn't you know it, empty it plays quite nice... 70-80 FPS smooth... no hitching, no stuttering (except for the odd autosave, but you expect that). As I build and build, it stays there until I get around 15k in size. Then it's down to t the 50's/60's FPS. And eventually when I ended it I think I had around 30K or so and I'm down to the 30's and 40's... Yea a huge build will suck down that FPS for sure at the moment. All in all though, it was a smooth experience so far. I only crashed out once and that was a strange thing that happened as my mouse went "free" to the other screen and I clicked without realizing and it went to the desktop, but as I came back in it crashed out. So... there's that but the rest of my day was spent gaming in it so long that I went from 12 noon (ish) to well past 7pm and didn't even realized I just spent 7 hours gaming. It has it's issues, but they aren't game breaking, just annoying B level bugs with like how the bridge building works and terrain glitches and such. The Road tools could be a bit better and smoother when joining oddly but then that's not game breaking, just annoying. Now I am about to hop back in for some more fun and to see if there's anything else to report. Yay!

One thing I noticed is that most games take your hardware into account and adapts the settings accordingly. This does not, you have to know enough to change the settings yourself. I have a medium specs PC but after I adjusted the settings it worked pretty good. Few Candy and TotalXclipse both have videos telling you how to adapt your settings. Was it perfect? No, but it was playable without all the visual issues others seem to have. Just a heads up for those having issues. I was able to play most settings at high by just disabling a lot of settings that just don't work on CS2. Outside of that I agree, this is an early access release not a fully worked out game. I am excited for the future, but right now I'm willing to accept playable just because so many other things are a step up. This game should have been held back until console was released as they will have to fix the graphic issues for that to happen. EA is known for sending out games that are broken or unfinished but unlike EA I believe that CO will get it done if we are patient.

It's not ready but we can't do anything about it!". - That's fine, but then we also shouldn't expect more ignorantly. Just too bad most general consumers will buy this unknowingly, as we, the ones who follow all this stuff, are still a minority. And even people who know will buy into it and complain, so...

This is only tangentially related, but this is the second release this year that if I play for more than an hour or two, I become physically ill. Not like extreme, just feeling bad overall. I thought it was a field of view thing, because the other game was Starfield, but I'm starting to think there's more to it if this game is doing it too. Is there some graphical thing that can just make you feel wrong after a while? I am functionally a cyclops, as I'm mostly blind in my right eye and don't know if that has anything to do with it. It's very strange.

I was hooked on CS1 on the console again lately, in expectation of the console release. But this one got delayed due to need for optimizations. This rushed release of CS2 is kinda a shame. There was still lots of high quality CS1 content being released by the community. More and more fantastic stuff on how to build great looking cities stuff in vanilla or console version. But all those content was put on hold so the "content creators" could push out all the CS2 preview videos.

Like great poet, you concisely pronounced exactly the right phrases reflecting the thoughts and emotions I have about it. Couldn't agree more. I think we all still love the franchise and are okay to wait and trust them to fix it over next year or so. I guess for devs - they could have done Baldur's gate stratey of releasing early access for few years and get free public testing that way to better optimise the product - lets be fair, it is a huuuge engine and it is understandably rough, but will become a diamond when polished.

Jedi Survivor and Forza MtorSport are examples of this and have taught me to wait until I see reviews that say the games not broke anymore or it's finally nearly perfect as EA has gotten Jedi to. I agree if you're gonna fund these companies at 70.00 a pop they need to treat us right and debut finished games. Even Spiderman 2in now having problems because of a day 1 patch so pass for now. I will say what I have seen of Cities it looks really good just not fully baked yet.

I can't even join the game, it crashes in the loading screen. It says that it will work fine on my laptop, but it unfortunately isn't 😢

It shouldn't be on the community to make performance improvements, but I'm super curious about what kind of mods are coming around regarding that. It's like modern day Minecraft Java and the performance mods.

I haven't played Cities Skylines 2 but I'm hopeful that Paradox will give the community the necessary updates and support. They shouldn't sell games until they're ready but we work with what we have

This whole thing about releasing a half assed unfinished game and patching it later isnt cool. For example I was playing the new Spiderman 2 game and I switched characters and I turned into a little white dev cube. Fell through the map. Hit game breaking bugs where I couldn't progress the story. Don't get me wrong the game is fun. I can see the hard work they put in but high profile games can't come out like that.

I'm still absorbed in BG3, DF. and Outpath - it's deflated my interest in other games I'd been looking forward to, including City Skylines 2, Starfield, and Return to Moria. I'm curious- with CS2, can you set your cities up to provide resources to each other? Have an agricultural city trade food for goods from the tech industry, or something along those lines?
