That line was the ultimate for me when I first saw this film. It’s the turning point of the whole film. He chooses his demise in order to not defy his own principle but projects it as the love of the people.

@@MountainStreamLives I think he had a legitimate concern for the people, which the scene with his financial advisor illustrates. But, yes, ultimately, a life lived according to the principal that he alone would chart his own course really was just too powerful. I suppose that is selfishness, in a way. Albeit, presented in a more complex way than we are used to.

The beginning shot of this scene is reminiscent of the scene when he was a little boy playing with his sleigh. The adults/people are in the foreground talking about him and determining his future for him, while he's in the background. He may have been thinking about that or not, don't know. But this time he impulsively is going to do what he wants, not what others are deciding for him.

LOVE that sound edit at the end: "SING-SING, GETTYS! SING-SI--" (door closes, car horn sounds.) 'Citizen Kane' is one of those films--like 'Sweet Smell of Success' (1957)--where listening to it is as much fun as watching it.

Always liked that Gettys and Emily seem to have a mutual respect for each other's tribulations at the hands of Kane. That, and what really pushes Gettys to end Kane's political career isn't simply greed or corruption, but anger at his mother's distress.

Kane wasn't born bad; I don't think he was a 'sociopath' or anything approaching it. He was the product of a bizarre, loveless upbringing where he was taught that money and the attainment of material things were all that mattered. I feel like he just didn't have the tools to be a fully integrated and empathetic human being. How he turned out is no surprise.

This film is the most satisfying, technically wise when it comes to aspects like cinematography, acting and photographic and musical artistry integrated in one film, script, dramatism, production, its frames are so well composed, sometimes like a live painting (like the Rosebud opening or kane with his mother), the nonlinear storyline, the unusual shots and angles, the camera movements, the edition and transition techniques, the score seems so accurate and diverse according to the scenes, it is so overtly American, its plot that revolves around a device (Rosebud), the makeup with ageing techniques, the production design with the plenty of props used in the film, especially in the last scene, its genre inspiring if not defining shots, takes and scenes, from gothic, mysterious almost hinting at thriller and horror shots at the beginning, the political drama and even some social criticism (from criticising gettys to fraud at polls), the dressing of the characters, the scenes are believable, the humour, drama and tragedy, the innovation in putting scenes together (a marriage like any other marriage), the realism of some scenes and the expressionism of others (the long shot at the opera theater, the shooting of a lamp that goes out symbolizing the end of the singer's career), the youth of the film at first, then it feels old at the end, so on. Technically the most accomplished film of its time and the most all around film of classic Hollywood, but still a bit dry next to other greats like Casablanca or The Godfather with their romanticism, the first and social realism, the second, and not as overtly melodramatic as gone with the wind. Very witty, it's obviously great and a masterpiece, so for all things technical it deserves its recognition. Perfect for the style of witty, intellectual, cosmopolitan and modern films back then, like the maltese falcon or Casablanca. It's among the greats and the technically most all around and accomplished film of the era for sure, and possiby one of the most influential, along with other greats like the searchers.

Did you get a lot of ROS marks on your papers from English teachers? Point well taken about being less fun than Casablanca but I’d argue it’s ultimately more enjoyable as there’s an arc that’s much greater in Kane than in Rick.

One can give Kane credit, most politicians would cave into corruption to save their reputation. Kane was willing to fight for the bitter end, to be an honest politician, even though it ended his career. Hardly hear such integrity anymore in modern times He would have been a great President if he had won

Nope, he would be a mediocre president. See, in the film, there are three interpretations on the kind of character Charles Kane that people have. Corporate executives see Kane as one of those dirty communists. Someone from the workers' rally sees Kane as a fascist. Lastly, Kane declares that he is an American. Ultimately, all interpretations are wrong because communists, fascists, and patriotic nationalists all believe in something bigger than themselves. Charles Kane is only in it for Charles Kane. This ultimately shows us Charles Kane's own fatal flaw: he wants to be loved at his own terms. He doesn't have true conviction. He ran for governor simply because deep down, he believes that he will be loved by the people
