Great information. I'm from NSW Australia. I have two potted dwarf lemons, a 14 year old potted Kafir lime, dwarf potted imperial mandarin, 40+ year olds inground Valencia orange and Eureka lemon tree that had reverted to 'wild' after severe cutbacks due to gall wasps in the past few years. Each of all these citrus last year was attacked by the leaf-curl pest and I followed expert advice to treat/spray with a mix of eco, neem, mineral oils and copper sulphate powder mix. All trees suffered after spaying and looked terrible ... You have just explained to me WHY! They turned brown and began to shrivel just like your video showed; they suffered sunburn. I have new growth coming in abundance on all the trees and after watching your informative video I WILL NOT be repeating the harsh concoction for prevention in the future that I was again just recently advised to do. Sunburn!!! I would never have thought it. Thank you so very much for your explanatory video and I will try to track down the equivalent products you demonstrated her at home.

I've wondered whether neem oil, et. al. was effective at killing the leaf miner inside the leaf. I've been growing citrus from seeds; and, the leaf miners have attacked every leaf. I've sprayed and have been monitoring the plants. New growth continues; so, I reckon the plant will survive. In another video I'd watched, the gardener suggested crushing the worms. In the case of disposing the trimmed leaves, the suggestion was to crush them under foot; although, for larger gardens with many trimmings, this may not be practical. Regarding too much heat and burning the foliage, how much is too much heat? 80, 85, 90+? Excellent tips. Subscribed.

I did my pest report for the bug class I just took at my local CC on these little devils. The bug that lays the larvae is one of the tiniest moths. My California pest book was very pessimistic about it basically just concentrate on hygiene (keep area under the tree clean) and spraying is most likely going to kill your beneficial pests. The "IPM" philosophy the ag schools are promoting tries minimize spraying; I did try Neem also pyrrethrin with oil but it didn't seem to be much help. Book says promote tree health don't cut off the damaged leaves. Though I guess taking out the leaves with active bugs will prevent them from eventually laying more eggs. The other IPM thing is rotate your use of different sprays to try and defeat adaptability. Also for cooling there is stuff called kaolin clay it's white and used for 100+ degree plant protection, I've used it on citrus and persimmon it helps; also supposed to retard the leaf miners from laying eggs and getting started as the clay on the surface of the leaf is supposed to retard the larvae.

I don't kill spiders normally because I know they do a lot of good, but I do have recluse in my house - they don't last long! Everyone has recluse where I live, just keeping things cleaned up keeps them at bay. We have those big gray and the brown orbs in our area - "Big Juicies" is my name for them but they are good for the yard/garden/environment - so I deal with it - don't like them on me though.

I've dealt with leaf miner for 25 years. The tree is at least 12 feet wide and high. I agree that trimming is first priority. I also trim trees up so that they're 3 feet (hip height) off the ground. It greatly reduces success of the larvae finding their way to the canopy. I too just trimmed off about five infected segments of new growth. I consider it minimal damage on the big tree. All were at eye level. Later, I'll check green fruits for the tell tale signs of miner. Those get tossed. The fruit is ok, but I don't want it to host the larvae. I also remove fallen leaves under the canopy, and put down fresh mulch layer. In 25 years, it's kept damage to a minimum.... Except the one year I got lazy. I am curious, does Bt work on killing off the adults? I haven't tried that yet.

First time viewer, and not an expert, but my guess is the plants have a deficiency of one or more micronutrients. The deficiency(s) could be caused by an excess of a different nutrient. You might want to check out Dr Tom Dykstra’s work on understanding why chewing and sucking bugs attack only unhealthy plants. Very thorough video. Thanks!

@@kimba8953 yes. I believe he does. Look for the AEA Kempf/Dykstra webinar on insect herbivory. It’s about a 3-4 part series. Covers citrus greening disease too. Draws direct correlation between brix and type of pest. Sucking insects attack low brix plants. Chewing insects attack medium brix plants. Nothing but mammals eat plants higher than 14 brix.

My mom has a dwarf orange tree of some kind in her flower bed that has been there since she bought the house already producing fruit since she didn't know how to take care of it I told her I'd take a look well one major thing that I have no clue of what to do is it appears that there is a large amount of sucker branches coming directly from the middle of the trunk upward and since it's been so long it is now producing fruit obviously not the desirable fruit has a way different leaves and I'd say just about as much growth as the rest of the tree but it's quickly in the center trunk at the top

Hello Cindy, The leaf color change may be one of two factors: (1) nutritional deficiency and (2) old leaves (usually 1-2 years old) that will ultimately fall and be replaced by newer leaves. Do not feed your lemon plants during the color winter months, enjoy the break. And use an organic granular fertilizer that will feed your plants for up to 3 months in the Spring, Summer & Fall. However, something you can do now to improve the condition of your plant in the winter is apply a foliar spray. Here are two video links that I published in the past month discussing this issue: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xWdq26Z_fomld6A AND kzitem.info/news/bejne/zKWD0aKLcYKGhKw Keep me posted on your gardening successes! Hi Charles! I need your help again. As you know, it's cooling off outside and it's time to bring the container kiddos in for the winter. What I've got are 3 Meyers, 3 - 15 month Pineapples, 5 - 4 month Pineapples, a Buddha's Hand Citron, and a Miracle Berry that have been outside all summer. I've got a Palram Mythos 6 x 8 greenhouse in my house to over-winter these guys but I've already got a couple of Cucamelons (Mouse Melons) in the greenhouse that I'm growing hydroponically using the mason jar Kratky system. That being said, I'm sure you know what my question is. How can I completely debug not only the foliage but the soil as well safely before I bring them indoors? I've got a can of the IV Organic 3 in 1 to treat the bark and foliage a few times but what can I use that would be effective for soil dwellers? The neem oil warning is a bit misleading, the benefits outweigh any burn on a few leaves. Not only is it THE MOST Effective organic insecticide/ fungicide.... but it also will help your plant absorb nutrients more efficently. I spray neem oil on my plants (and I grow a LOT of plants) like 1-2 times a month and i have seen like two leaves burned like you showed.... but it could have been from something else. I spray every plant from seedlings to 40+ year old trees

Good afternoon Jason Harrold, Thank you for your feedback! Agreed, neem oil is an amazing horticultural oil... my favorite of all! However, this year, I have met several people that have had significant damage to their plants by neem oil (especially in the 95+ degree summer weeks). Application of IV Organic concurrent with a horticultural oil, or even better, the morning following a horticulture oil application, has helped many people keep their plants protected from overheating & burning. IV Organic GOOD AFTERNOON!!! IDK, its interesting how your burn on your meyer lemon and my burn on my lemon were the same. I just think maybe it was a reaction to nutrition. But its been magical on so many other trees and plants in regards to bugs/ fungi. Like Ive always had problems with bugs eating my leaves especially on lettuce/ kale and never have i been able to grow them and now nothing touches them. Also works for my peppers which i have 20 different varieties, right now, and my cucumbers, zucchini, kale, lettuce, lemon/ papaya/ three guava trees/ avocado tree etc etc etc hundreds of plants that its been really magical with. I can show you pictures of infestation of fungi and scale bugs or aphids and then two weeks later they are gone. Out of hundreds of plants i can probably count the number of burned leaves I found on my meyer lemon on three fingers. Thats what Im saying. so because the neem has been used on young and old plants and trees, in full sun and shade. in over 100 plus degree weather with only a few burned leaves...this is why i think its coincidental and not related. Not sure. You are the expert! I just think more people should use it Also because despite other insecticides, it doesnt really harm bees or ladybugs and other beneficial insects. Also I always water before spraying and I always spray with an atomizer at night. Two tbs spoons of neem to two tablespoons of dr bronners castile soap to one gallon of water

I have four 8ft high Orange trees which are being attacked by leaf miners. I spray neem oil about a half hr. before dark. Since they are larger trees, I use my airless paint sprayer. The size tip for my sprayer gun is a 209. It emits a very fine spray which is needed to cover the leafs. I spray every two weeks. Then I dust intermittently using diatomaceous earth. It's a job, but does wonders to kill the miners. P.S. Also cut off all the infected leaves first and rake up all the existing compost surrounding the tree and burn it! Replace with fresh mulch!

Hi there, Can you just add IV organics in the spray bottle, instead of using meem oil?
@IVOrganic
7 жыл бұрын
Hello Marsha, The % improvement using our product for citrus leafminer is still being tested. However, we have a video that will be released later this week where Brad Fickes, who has 30+ years as a wholesale nursery manager and citrus care professional, states that his citrus leaves (trees) have never looked as good as they do since he has been using IV Organic as a foliar spray for two consecutive years. Applying the product to the top/ bottom of the leaves should create some barrier to the fly/ month that creates the leafminer caterpillars. But I have never used it exclusively to treat leaf miner. Typically, I will add the neem or mineral oil in the evening, and after coating the plant all night and early morning, I would then do a foliar spray of IV Organic to keep the plant several degrees cooler to offset the heat that will result from the application of the oil pest control. I hope to have more information on this topic in the upcoming year, or so! Charles :-)

Hello Jose Jimenez, How about if you checkout the location on the fruit where the browning is happening... Any chance it is caused by sunburn? See if the damage is on the south or south-west side of the fruit only... which is the sunniest and hottest side. Let me know the results.... Also, google sunburn fruit. If that is the case, you can protect the future harvest of fruit by coating the fruit with the IV Organic foliar spray to keep the fruit (as well as leaves, stems, etc) several degrees cooler, especially helpful on those high 90's and 100's degree days. Charles :-)

Hello shaneel lal, So sorry to hear that! I've been teaching that whenever you use an oil, such as neem oil, you have to be concerned about the temperatures too. Most oil products will state that it should not be used when temperatures exceed 90 degrees. The reason is that the oils make the plant hotter on a hot day, just as tanning oils can harm our skin. When using horticultural oils, it is advisable to follow up with IV Organic WhiteWash or 3-in-1 products as a foliar spray the following morning (before the afternoon high temps) which will better protect the leaves (and stems) that are sprayed with IV Organic from overheating. Please keep me posted! Charles :-)

Sweetie. Remove the soil and mulch away from the trunks of your baby trees! That is far more important than worrying about leaf miners. Pull the mulch and soil away from the trunks of your woody perennials! Keeping moisture on the bark of the trucks will enhance bacteria and eventually girdle this tree. If one applies too much nitrogen the insects will go to the high nitrogen tissues, insects love thin skinned leaves with lots of nitrogen. Leaf miners are less worrisome than powdery mildew. Leaf miners have but a tiny window of damage. Making sure your trunks are in the air and not buried to enhance bacteria that eat away the cambium is far more important. Neem oil is only for exterior problems and should rarely rarely be used. i am so glad you use Neem at night! Prevention is all important. Pesticides of any sort are but band aids on problems we should know better to prevent. I am so glad you are reading these labels!! That is what we were taught in pesticide licensing! 'Read the label 5X each and every time you use a pesticide'...learn how to prevent problems in the garden. Learn how to relax with lots of short term problems such as leaf miners, leaf beetles, gee, how to use REEMAY!!

Do you add the Tree Guard oil when combining the paint with neem oil, mineral oil, BT or Spinosad? Thank you
@IVOrganic
6 жыл бұрын
Hello Riptide 10x, You can combine IV Organic Plant Guard with neem oil, mineral oil, BT... but not Spinosad (as spinosad is a bacteria-base control that you would not want to coat with other products). When using Spinosad, you should have no other products used on your plants for several weeks before & after. Let me know if you have any other questions. Charles :-)

Since you are a biologist, can you explain why the Spinosad can only be applied 6 times yearly? What will happen to the plant if more is applied? Additionally, since only the new growth is affected should I spray only that and not bother with the rest of the plant? (I live in south Florida and am having trouble getting some semi-dwarf citrus started. They're still alive, but don't have much large leaf growth. Therefore, they aren't as healthy that I want them to be. I have tried using the leaf miner pheramone with the spinosad. These trees are only ending their second year in my garden. They're still babies.)

Hello Patricia, Thank you for reaching out to me for your question! :) Most products have a maximum number of applications, including organic ones such as spinosad, neem oil, mineral oil, etc. All these products cap the number of application times so that they are not abused or excessively used. Also as important, it is of more benefit to the plants to change types of organic pest control products-- but be sure to allow at least 3 weeks to pass, especially when using the oils before using another product. And never mix products as I have seen some gardeners use. I want to also share that although I like the concept of spinosad on plants, I am not sure how effective the product is and how long the shelf life is. I am one of many gardeners that have seen the product "collapse" from a milky white solution to a yellow / clear solution typically over the course of the year-- so another reason to change your organic pest control methods every 3 weeks. And to get your citrus to grow a little faster, try using blood meal and/ or liquid fish fertilizer, in addition to your citrus fertilizer, to give your plants and extra boost of nitrogen. I hope this helps? Please reach out to me if you have any other questions! :) Charles

Also, I have lived in South Florida for about 8 years and know that the primary time of year you plants may benefit from pest control is May through September -- these are the peak months for leaf miners throughout the county. Let me know if I can help with anything else! :)

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I will definitely use my fish fertilizer on the citrus to get it growing. And, thanks for the info on the organic treatments, like Spinosad. I didn't realize that there was a limited shelf life for these products. Like the idea of the blood and bone, but how do I keep my dogs from digging it up. Smells awfully good to them. :>)

You're welcome Patricia, Regarding the smell-- there are some products that you can add to repel the dogs and other animals-- however, if you can keep them at bay for a few days the smell typically goes away. Have a great week! Charles :)

I also love in S. Florida (Ft Lauderdale), and my citrus trees are so badly infested with leafminers. I'll try incorporating the Spinosad. I've been switching between BT and the same brand of Neem that you have in the video.

Hello Rafiqa11, Great to hear from you! Sorry to hear about the pest on your citrus leaves!!! Hear are a few suggestions of pests that may be consuming your citrus leaves: grasshoppers, earwigs and/ or swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. You may want to consider alternating your organic based treatments a few weeks apart with oil-based (such as Neem & Mineral Oil) and a bacterial based (such as Captain Jack's Spinosad). Here is the link: www.homedepot.com/p/Bonide-32-oz-Ready-to-Use-Captain-Jacks-Dead-Bug-Brew-2506/203564356 Since we both know you lost the effects of the Neem oil with our last heavy rains, you may want to reapply again ASAP as this is a good clear week without rain. Please keep me posted on your gardening successes! :-) Charles

Hello Mandy, That would be GENIUS! Some people use a neem oil drench to kill soil pests-- But not sure if it would work on leaf miners. I am not an advocate of the neem oil drench as some beneficial insects are killed using this approach and a healthy soil biology is important in breaking down organic fertilizers that ultimately feed your plants. If you find an article or blog discussing, please share it with me! I'll do my research too!!! Great thinking!!! :) Charles

IV Organic I wonder if diatomaceous earth would end the life cycle sooner. I think it's supposed to not hurt to many beneficial insects. oh and I love watching your channel. I'm near Menifee, CA. and have these leaf miners. I've sprayed with been oil. but hoping with the cooler weather I can redo treatment in January.

Hello Kathy, We were neighbors not to long ago.... I lived a few years in Canyon Lake which is not too far from you! As I just wrote someone earlier today, leaf miners and moles are my #1 & #2 pests that I wish I was not having to battle in my garden. And somehow, I am noticing new leaf miner damage in my garden this early December, when the leaf miner larvae damage is typically during only the warmer months of April/ May through October. When you have a few minutes, please call my Arizona friends at www.arbico-organics.com/ who specialize in organic pest control. Please share what you learn with me!!! Thank you, Charles

@IVOrganic

Hello Brandoniskoolerdanu, Great question! :) DO NOT MIX the two together. I've seen some gardener's doing that, but the oils will most likely kill the beneficial bacteria in the spinosad. They are totally different natural ways of controlling pests in the garden and should be spaced at least 3 weeks apart when alternating products; but no not mix. Great question, again!! :) Charles
