The clock in front of City Hall is keeping time again after a repair and restoration led by city carpenter Fred North. Theodore "Ted" R. Crom, a world renowned horologist (one who studies clocks/time), had the great vision to rescue the Seth Thomas clock when the 1886 Alachua County Court House was replaced by the County Administration Building. He preserved this piece of Gainesville/Alachua County history by his restoration of the clock to its original working order and leading the effort to build the clock tower in 1983, nearly a century after it first rang out over town. It was his wish that it be enjoyed by the local community and visitors for another century plus.
