CITY OF DREAMS
(A Symphonic Suite for Wind Orchestra)
by Benjamin Yeo
CITY OF DREAMS (A Symphonic Suite for Wind Orchestra) was commissioned by the Band Director’s Association (Singapore) for its 20th Anniversary celebration concert. This three-movement work aims to symbolise and celebrate our on-going vibrant band scene; and at the same time not forgetting our past, our history.
III. March ‘Riding That Rainbow’
A distant approaching drumbeat is heard emerging from the closure of the tribute from the previous movement - the onward march of our nation. Snippets of familiar motives are heard throughout the march highlighting parts of our Singapore band story. This march aims show our vibrant and energetic band scene as we look towards a promising future!
NOTE TO CONDUCTOR:
This march is part of a three-movement suite and may be performed separately as a stand-alone work. You may want to consider adding a two-bar (military) three-beat drumroll before the commencement of the march. The printed tempo marking serves as a guide only and you may even consider adjusting the tempo up to 128-132 crotchet b.p.m. to achieve a better overall momentum.
The music aims to highlight part of our Singapore band story and some familiar motives were inserted in the process of writing. It will be meaningful to highlight these important ideas during a performance and at the same time informing the members where the ideas were taken from. This will serve as a good opportunity for them to listen to the original, do a little research and finally understand how they play a part in our Singapore band story. Some excerpts include ‘Majulah Singapura’ (Singapore’s National Anthem); ‘Singapura Suite’ (SYF 1999/2015 Set Piece by Jan Van der Roost); ‘Sunrise & Safari’ (SYF 2007 Set Piece by Adam Gorb); ‘Blue Ridge Saga’ (one of the many popular SYF Choice Pieces by James Swearingen); and ‘Home’ (1997 NDP Theme Song by Dick Lee which remains as one of Singaporean’s favourites).
I sincerely hope that you and your students will enjoying performing the music as much as I have enjoyed writing it. I wish you all the best in the performance of the work!
